Hello! I just wanted to say that Hyundai Ioniq (first generation) is the best EV for me
Reasons:
- Quite cheap (compared to other EV’s)
- Great range (if only it mattered this much)
- Good cargo space
And the most important thing
- KNOBS! (oh god I hate and obsolutely despise touchscreen-only controls)
I acknowledge Nissan Leaf exist and I give it superiority over ioniq in design but only the pre-facelift model. Haha funny frog car. I love it :)
That’s it. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
If you know any more EV’s with knobs and buttons, share your sacred knowledge in the comments.
My F150 Lightning has knobs and buttons for most functions. Specifically the XLT trim, only the XLT and pro have knobs and buttons. Plus it’s a truck which makes it the best EV for me. I tried to go with a small EV car and ended up having to rent a truck several times that year.
Many times I’ve been tempted by a Model 3 but I never could justify paying more to have less cargo space than with my Ioniq. It’s really the most practical car I know of for the price.
I have a 2023 Bolt, it has knobs and buttons and switches, many of which are on the steering wheel and you can feel them easily. I got a used one for $15k, the range is great. I don’t really like how far down the climate controls are, if you have them memorized it’s not bad but if you have to look them you have to take your eyes way too far off the road. I also don’t like how the infotainment can alter physical car functions, not a fan of internet connected devices being able to control the car, that’s not specific to the bolt though, I hate where the car industry is going.
I also have a bolt but the 2022 euv, the first mod* I did was to put terminators on the OnStar module so it can’t phone home, I use android auto for navigation so I don’t need any of the built in stuff. It quickly became my favorite car, we were going to get one of the lemon bolt Ev’s but after test driving the premier trim euv I felt it was worth the extra price for vented seats etc and more space for the car seat
I love this kind of mods <3
😇I love my 4yo Dacia Spring
😁i guess for the similar reasons:
- navigation / entertainment is disconnected from internal car computer
- Still, has Carplay / Android Auto
- can be opened and started using a real hardware key
- monitors the distance to car in front and warns if I am to near to be able to react (and actively breaks if necessary)
- heating can be started via app (but setup of temperature, airflow and where are hardware nobs that preserve their state)
- It is only about 1000 kg
- mostly drives 200km (depending on weather and speed)
- can easily be parked due to small size
- has ISO-fix child seat mounting
- can charge to 80% in 50min (if fast charging option is chosen)
- has only one up-sale add-on option (fast charging)
- has a feature to set max speed while driving on steering wheel
- internet features can easily be enabled and disabled (even while driving)
- speakers are ok (not too bad)
- eco mode that prevents you from accelerating to fast and making your co-passengers sick
- has back peeping as well as build-in cam
- can easy be charged over night using 230v16a plug (adapter had to be bought separately, tho)
I see why you love it :)
And yet they stopped making them! Pretty much every available Ioniq 28 or 38kwh in the UK had been used as a cab since new, so has 100k+ miles and a shiny steering wheel. I’m still tempted to get one, as they start at £5k but they will have been abused and will likely need a bit of work to get roadworthy.
The ionic is 72k AUD, it’s definitely not cheap over here.
BYD have a lot of knobs in addition to the touch screen. You can do more with the screen, but the knobs are adequate (imo)

He said first generation Hyundai Ioniq not the Ioniq 5
The first gen ioniqs are some of the best value second hand EV’s you can buy:
Don’t those have like 100 miles of range?
280-311KM
Second hand seems better, but I just wrote off the entire brand based on their new pricing.
Correct me if I am wrong, but is the first gen the one that had fire issues?
Thats awfull! In Europe you can have one for just under 19k AUD :(
He accidentally got the wrong Ioniq generation, many people are not aware of the Ioniq range before the Ioniq 5
I also have a 2020 ioniq and agree with you, great car and exceptional second hand value 💪
Yeah, pricing is insane, especially given our proximity to Korea.
