they’re popular in non western gaming circles. i don’t know (and im not saying this as a pejorative i genuinely don’t know) why people insist on buying the same game every year like COD or FIFA and not having any taste in games (not bad taste, literally no taste, they do not like or dislike any particular game they just want the newest thing to pass the time). i suspect it’s the same thing as being a football fan and i have no clue why that is.

It’s what their friends play and they haven’t been playing games long enough (usually in their late teens early 20’s) is usually why.

If they are older than that they are just slop enjoyers.

here gamers older than that broadly fall into three camps: FIFA and mortal combat pilled (‘game cafe’ console games essentially), slightly older folk that are into their own youth games like WOW private servers, CS 1.6 and GTA: SA online, or slightly younger that are addicted to CS:GO, DOTA 2, LOL or rainbow six siege. the first group is annoying, the second group is harmless and the third group is a toxic cesspool to be avoided at all costs. slop enjoying is spread between all of them but more prominent in the first group.

the community makes it impossible to pub

As someone who doesn’t understand the proper strategy in playing LoL, I played it the way I play every game: to enjoy myself, not to compete; I used to ‘jungle’ as they call it, because I love PvE content and couldn’t be bothered with the PvP content (yes, this was my thinking when I picked up LoL); a few games full of angry team mates later I realized this was not the game for me

Yeah jungle is literally the most difficult position, which requires extremely specific timings based on a myriad of things (the heros people are playing, how well they are farming, if they have gone back to buy etc. etc.).

There is a reason the old school pub method was just to farm as Master Yi and try to max level as quickly as possible. You don’t have to worry about anything else. Meta changes too fast for me to care, plus, LoL is extremely boring compared to DotA. Either way though, both communities are intolerable, where even if you do put in the research and understand the timings, people will not forgive you for not literally being fucking Faker (which is an extremely old school reference at this point.)

Christ, his hands must be shot at this point. Also goes to show how much I pay attention to modern league (literally used to run betting pools for it a decade ago).

Faker is a player. Probably the best there will ever be to play league. He’s been playing since the start and while other pros have retired to coaching, management, casting, or other things this guy is still winning world championships. It’s crazy.

If you only buy one game a year, you don’t have a reason to keep up with game recommending media, so you won’t run into everyone saying Silksong is better, just whatever game gets its advertising blasted into the general non-gaming media with the largest marketing budget.

(Also I think there’s something good about releasing a game every year! If you play a game at 12 years old and the next game in the franchise takes 8 years, you’re not anticipating the next release, you’re in college.)

people here are not exposed to that marketing budget though it’s genuinely word of mouth from others (who are exposed to it probably), but then why don’t they play any other game with word of mouth that is not slop?

plus no one buys any games besides centralised server multiplayer games and those aren’t cheap. most people literally pirate this slop (as well as all other games). even for consoles you can just pay someone to install games for you. on top of that most multiplayer games on pc are either peer to peer or server games with dev released or reverse engineered server executables. most of them don’t even need steam anymore, an entire infrastructure and suite of software has been developed that makes this process as smooth as possible, free of charge or with minimal cost.

Ah but that means they take up your whole game budget, so why waste time finding out about other games that you won’t be able to afford?

(I mean yeah you can buy 10 copies of Cinco Paus for that price. I know these games suck shit and are a waste of money. You know these games suck shit and are a waste of money. But I understand how someone can fall into this trap.)

there’s a lot of other games without the language barrier though. there isn’t a game binary between mainstream blockbuster slop and boutique bible sized critique of capitalism, most games are about having fun shooting the guy in front of you in various ways.
