At the very least to describe what the various communities are for. There seem to be many “general-purpose” communities and I do not understand the difference between them, and there are also communities that seem to be duplicates of one another, namely /c/hexbear, /c/den, and /c/feedback.
Additionally, I believe having a wiki blurb for common “emoji” would be beneficial. Who is the person in the image? What is their politics? Why is their image immortalized on our platform? What are some of the common usages of the emoji in terms of communicating a message or emotion through shorthand? Often I am faced with comments that I find incomprehensible due to the use of an emoji that I do not understand.
Honestly there should be a page that just displays the emojis and scroll to find the picture and click for an explanation. It’s really stupid to just ask “who is she?” in reply to an emoji you’ve seen twenty times and never known the context and then like three people come out of the woodwork to yell at you about hentai and you have no idea what the hell is going on.
If someone actually types out all that about the emojis we will end up getting rid of half of them lol
Good.
The emojis are like a fun hidden mythology to me, I don’t know what many are or where they came from but I just use them for emphasis like regular emojis
Over time I learned how they were used like an extra part of the online dialect. If you don’t know what someone means with their emoji hieroglyphics it doesn’t hurt to ask usually. Sometimes people can be rude to others that ask legitimate questions though which is a tendency that should be destroyed.if emojis had their own pages you could comment on that would be neat

this is a great idea. a catalog of the emojis would be super helpful bc the emoji picker is not that helpful if you only have a vague recollection of the context the emoji comes from

I’ll need to double check this before I post, but I think these 3 at least have decent sidebars, unlike some of the comms. From memory:
- hexbear: local-only meta community for non-technical discussion about the site & site policies
- den: local-only chat community, largely unused and mostly should have been posted to the prior IMO
- feedback: technical site discussion
Hah!
Hexbear Meta Community
Posts should be a a Proposal (idea for changing the site), Feedback (regarding non-technical aspects of the site, for technical please use https://hexbear.net/c/feedback), or Appeals (regarding admin/moderator actions).
Yep. My most recent post there would maybe have been better elsewhere since I didn’t explicitly ask for a comm to be
defeateddefederated, but that’s why I posted there.A space for Hexbear users to chat with other Hexbear users, users from other instances will be banned if they comment or post.
A bunch of the posts on the first page feel to me like they’d fit better in the meta comm, yeah.
Tell us how we’re doing and report bugs. If you’re technically inclined, please submit bugs to the chapo gitea project.
A couple posts IMO would fit better elsewhere, but mostly aligned with that.
i came across this before but it’s not very fleshed out at all. it would be cool if it was though cause things can get confusing like you said.
I wonder if short blurbs describing the emoji could be embedded in alt-text?
I think it would be difficult to make something that does a good job of describing the emoji, in the way of answering all the questions in the post, while being actually good as alt text. Though, having good alt text can sometimes be useful, for example it might tell the name of the person in the image so you can go look them up.

That makes sense! Certainly it would be far smaller than a wiki, but might help alleviate confusion.
Can’t alt text be a link? That would be best, I’d think.
Not as far as I know.

I like this idea. There is a lot of ambiguity over where a post should go and I think having a meta wiki would largely eliminate that.

Extremely rude and unhelpful.
That’s the rest of the wiki
That would be phenomenal. This is a great idea.
