I checked that on google maps, that’s about 1,400 feet (425 meters) to drive up that ramp

I am genuinely impressed and shocked at that distance

From what I’ve read of similar incidents in Brussels, a person unfamiliar with the area underestimates the length of the right-of-way and keeps driving in hopes they can get off soon. But the right-of-way keeps going and by this point they’ve driven too deep in to reverse, and then they give up.

It’s funny how much power people in the comments give to the idea of taking someone’s driving license away. That would have stopped her for sure.

It wouldn’t. But if you manage to mess up this bad, you have to be a horrible driver who shouldn’t have a license in the first place. I see a ton of really bad drivers on a daily basis. Things like driving on a freeway without even considering to look is the absolute norm. The reason they don’t just crash all the time is because other people look and do their job. A lot of people shouldn’t have a license, maybe me too, who the fuck knows. At least i try to be careful, look around and drive the speed limit and care for pedestrians and bicycles. Which apparently is a nono for a lot of people.

A few weeks ago in my area, we had an old lady (mid 70’s) reverse into a car… and then a cafe and then a patron in said cafe. Now the guy she hit was mostly unscathed, but she did a fair amount of damage to the other parked car and also the storefront. As I later found out, it’s also not her first car accident in recent years, just the first that had a victim. She lives on a property 30 mins out of town. She shouldn’t have been driving at that age in her state, but she also needs groceries to live. It’s her fault for driving while unable to draw a clock, but it wasn’t her fault that she needed to drive at that age in that state. Her adult children are over 1,000km away, her late husband moved them to a farm in the 90’s, her government doesn’t want to invest in elderly care.

There’s not a lot of options for some people. Drive until they do something to lose their license. Once that happens, they would lose all independence and will likely have to move into a nursing home. In this case, she can afford a decent retirement home. But what if she was a perpetual renter? What if she had fewer to no assets? What if she was slightly less fortunate?

We live with an orphan crushing machine, yes. But that machine will happily also crush the elderly. It’s a travesty that some people are allowed to drive, but it’s more of a travesty that they have to drive.

You only matter to capitalists as long as you’re able to hold a shovel or a rifle. Otherwise, welcome to the meat grinder.

“Human Resources” is a much more sinister term than most people realize.

How bad of a driver can she really be if she made it all the way up there?

My guess is on some sort of mental breakdown/using 100% of your free will situation.

I guess it’s also possible she was just blindly following Google Maps or something.

They have a Utah plate, I don’t mean to be prejudiced by I’ve seen Utah drivers do some wild things in cities. Probably a combo of unfamiliar area and maps telling to turn there, once you’re on the track there you can’t turn around really so maybe she figured she’d just keep going til she got stuck.

Some kind of publicity stunt? I can see someone leaving a stolen car or a beater on the tracks to protest the train for whatever (stupid) reason, but a new car in great condition? Maybe if it was stolen, but I think it would be difficult to get the car on the tracks without messing up the undercarriage somehow.
