It is likely far higher in the end:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_European_heatwave
The 2003 European heat wave saw the hottest summer recorded in Europe since at least 1540.[2][3] Spain, France, and Italy were hit especially hard. The heat wave led to health crises in several countries and combined with drought to create a crop shortfall in parts of Southern Europe. The death toll has been estimated at more than 70,000.[4][5]
To put into relativion, in 2020 (the first year of the pandemic) there was a small, barely noticed heatwave in Germany at the begin of August. That heatwave is believed to have killed more people than Covid-19 in Germany in 2020.
To be fair I don‘t expect many people to die of covid this year.
I think the poster means 2020, not 2026. ‘This’ year should have been ‘that’ year. At least, that’s my interpretation.
yeah, correct!
Don’t be such a pessimist, 2026 isn’t over yet. Plenty of time for more bad things to happen!
I’ve been told that this is normal climate change, and that we should adapt quicker
Meanwhile, my government [France]: Drink some water and get back to work!
Meanwhile the German chancellor: Just because we’re rolling back climate protection laws, the world won’t end tomorrow.
