There is a story in the UK news right now: an 84 year old woman was taking blood thinners when she accidentally cut herself at home. Blood started pouring from the wound to the extent that one witness later said “There was a lot of blood. It was literally dripping down her arm onto the floor."
She lived alone and I guess being 84, probably limited dexterity, and now having one hand out of action, needed help in dealing with this. So she walked to the pharmacy three minutes down the road. Instead of helping her the pharmacist said ‘We don’t deal with blood,’ and complained that she was being unhygienic by dripping blood onto the floor.
So she walked to her GP surgery who also turned her away, saying they had no nurse on duty. Apparently the GPs themselves are too important to deal with something like this. They sent her away, telling her to call for an ambulance, but she didn’t want to divert an ambulance away from someone with more serious problems.
So she left the GP surgery and wandered the streets, scared, crying and dripping with blood until eventually her neighbour saw her and put a plaster on it for her.
This is exactly what it’s like trying to get help from the authorities in the UK now. Whether it’s vulnerable people starving to death after their benefits are wrongfully stopped, people with medical problems being turned away without tests or left to languish on waiting lists for years, asking your MP for assistance and having them refuse to get involved, and a myriad of other things, all the people in positions of power now are just in it for the money and status. No-one wants to help. The humanity is gone and people have to rely on the goodwill of random members of the public for help, or go without.
Bullshit. What do you mean you don’t have a nurse on staff. It’s a miniscule knife cut in a gp office. It will take you 10 seconds. Your secretary could handle this, one of the other patients could handle this, there are trained monkeys that could do this. Clean the wound, apply pressure, apply bandage. Use a cold compress if you feel like it. Done. If it keeps bleeding she has bigger problems and you send her to the hospital with the bandage.
