He was convicted in court by a judge on the basis that he owned the username, so whether or not there was evidence on his device (could be deleted) was irrelevant to them, they had the evidence of receiving it on the other device from what they believed was the username he owned.
Probably plea deal. 18 month sounds low for a conviction otherwise.
