I want to learn a new language, but I’m torn between Russian or Chinese.
With Russian, I could enjoy tolstoy, dostoevsky and other Russian authors in their authentic language. I could probably also communicate with a lot of east European workers. And if shit hits the fan, I could just defect to Russia, lmao.
Chinese is cooler in every possible way. I’ve always been a bit of a weeaboo for east Asia, and consider myself a Buddhist, so knowing Chinese opens up a lot of doors. Plus, their memes seem be pretty dank as well. Considering we’re headed for the Chinese Century, knowing the language seems extremely useful.
Though I live in bumfuck nowhere in Norway, so I won’t likely get many chances to actually practice the languages, and travelling isn’t in my cards.
Russian has the benefit of being closer to other “western” languages, so most people will claim that it will be easier for you to learn than Chinese. YMMV. I have minuscule personal experience, but I can pick out words and letters from Russian in a way that I cannot with Chinese.
You are close enough to Russia you might actually use it. That being said, chinese is suprisingly easy and is useful for more of the world
