I don’t see what distinguishes her from any other pug.

The runner-up also looks fairly normal. He’s just albino and missing some fur.

Third place is actually ugly. He seems like he has a cleft palate or something. He looks kinda sad though. The more I look at him the more I feel bad for him.

MUG Root Beer, a contest sponsor, will make limited-edition soda cans with Jinny Lu’s face gracing the cover, as well.

Oh that’s why. They can’t put an actually ugly dog on soda cans.

This is like when movie-stars put on bad makeup to “look ugly”, and they end up looking like average people.

what’s the communist line on breeding dogs like that?

my gut instinct is that it’s a nasty thing to do. those poor things always snorting and slobbering and having all kinds of problems. I know some otherwise-normal people who have this kind of dog. and it was on purpose, they paid good cash to have the exact characteristics they want.

I think it’s probably OK to breed for temperament and approximate adult size so people can get animals that are suited to their lifestyles. anyone who has a legitimate need for a working dog can also do their thing, within guidelines I can’t speculate about because I don’t know enough.

Some communists have thought breeding dogs was OK, at least for some purposes. Most famously the Silver Fox . Perhaps there are other examples.

Breeding animals for grossly deformed looks that causes severe painful health issues is grotesque. Pugs are probably the most popular example of this. Just look at a pugs skull and you can see the extreme deformity compared to its wolf ancestors. Pugs used to have normal sized snouts. Pugs are wonderful dogs, but the trend to keep breeding flatter and flatter faces have caused them severe health issues.

Now they are trying to do this to cats, Scottish folds should not be bred anymore. The same mutation that causes their “cute” ears is also related to cartilage and bone deficiencies that causes severe arthritis. These cats will live a life of severe pain, just because humans think folded ears are “cute”. Scottish Folds are banned in many countries including Scotland. Another breed that is considered “cute” is the munchkin, which has short limbs, but these short limbs is also associated with severe spinal issues, another case of “cute” leading to an extremely painful life.

Dogs aren’t a need, so breeding them is always gross, even for certain ‘positive’ characteristics. I won’t touch the topic of seeing eye dogs other than to suggest that if society and infrastructure were more accommodating, they would be much less necessary for a lot of people. But nobody needs other kinds of ‘working’ dogs because the kind of work they do shouldn’t exist. Police dogs, herding dogs, sled dogs, racing dogs. Nobody needs to have a family golden retriever either, no matter how much I or they love dogs.

Buying from breeders should always come with reactions of disgust, regardless of the breed. If not for the characteristics and health of the dog, then for their cruel methods, and profiting off the reproduction and sale of living beings.

I find the concept of breeders very intuitively icky. But if we are going to continue to live with dogs (and there’s no reason to think that will stop anytime soon) they need to come from somewhere. Where? Assuming you don’t have a feral dog community, which most places don’t want to have.

And doesn’t it seem better to be able to get a small dog that’ll be happy in an apartment without a lot of space to run around if that’s where you find yourself? I’ve seen situations of dogs that are obviously mismatched to their environment and it is miserable. I don’t see the whole “breeder” concept would be needed if people would be flexible about the exact details of what they end up with.

Over the years I try to stop judging people who have those expensive dogs. I figure it’s like being religious or something; I’ll never really understand but apparently the good outweighs the bad for them. If I were in charge I’d ban dog breeders and religion on the first day and then whoever wanted to get unbanned would have to explain why their project is not bad and be subject to committee oversight in implementation.

This just goes back to my first sentence. People won’t like this, but from an animal rights perspective, the desire for pets to the extent that we are okay with the continuation of animal breeding is selfish. Some people are more noble and adopt dogs because they like to take care of them and have their companionship, but again, dogs are not a need. They are a want.

At best, people want dogs because they like dogs and think they’re cute and fun. Continuing the inherently cruel practice of dog breeding going because we want cute and fun animals to live with us is an example of speciesism.

The ideal outcome is that all currently existing shelter and feral dogs are cared for, then there are no more domestic dogs. There are only wolves and feral dogs who again have a more communal relationship with humans to the extent that if they invite themselves to live in people’s houses or hang out at the corner store, we should accommodate them as best we can with shelter, healthcare, etc.
