What irks me the most is the dumbing down part. The whole paywall and pushing features I can kind of forgive but making things more and more dumb down is objectively bad for everyone.
They slowly train the average user to be stupider regardless of whether they are making good money or if the user is a paying customer.
And half the time it’s in a fucking browser.
Hey quick rant, I’m a professor and due to budget cuts they cut our MS Office so it’s online only. I was already getting into non-slop software but now I need to check for compatibility using the browser version, since podiums only have Office and we’re supposed to use that.
So what I’m trying to say is, I’m feeling this right now. Shit doesn’t even have master slides or mathematical formula editing, ffs.
Enterprise Office in the cloud is stupid since security settings for businesses tends to break a lot of stuff that complex documents use. I got a three for one punch for my application I wrote because Office went online, Microsoft depreciated using IE in macros, and then my company put information I’d pull from the browser session into god awful frames (in 2025!). I said screw it, use what still works, I’m not chasing this anymore.
Haha, it’s even worse in academics because anything from students is protected. Unless they host on campus, it’s a violation even if MS super duper promises not to leak information. It’s also why we can’t use ChatGPT, though fools still do.
Edit: I mean for grading, asking a clanker is still fine but a terrible idea.

When viewing public content, like YouTube or Maps, sure you’re right. But that’s besides the point given that the post clearly refers to editors, not just viewers.
On cloud editors where my documents are non-public until I explicitly enable public access “for anyone with the link” - by using the share button - it’s not much tracking but literally required functionality. Even if we ignore corporate crap, that also applies to privacy focused, self hosted options like Immich
Can’t I just export to a file and share that? Yes, in some cases, but not in all. I might need collaborative features or I’m working on a weird type of document where I can’t expect the recipient to have compatible native software installed, or it might be in a work context where my personal choices for software might be limited.
this “editor” is probably a electron app that shows you a web app, or some other web based thingz so every vendor connected to that button is collecting data all the same like every other website
That’s clearly not a social share button depicted in the drawing. It’s an os / custom sharing button. Not to mention social share buttons don’t necessarily load from the shared platform’s own website, run javascript or track you across browsers.
Share buttons exist because people use them.
It sounds like you’re both talking past each other re: is it the “share on Facebook” tracking thing, or the smartphone “share” button that is just how you export a file these days.
I actually like auto save. It’s a good feature.
Just make manual save also save explicit checkpoints.
I prefer restoration points, stored locally, since most of my work is less than an hour and doesn’t need checkpoints. Sometimes something goes terribly wrong and I want to start over. But if it crashes? Yeah, restore me!
