Researchers surveyed 822 caregivers across the United States with children ages 4 to 8, examining how different types of parenting stress influence family media habits. Parents experiencing emotional distress were less likely to consistently enforce screen-time limits, while those who felt overwhelmed by their child’s behavior were more likely to use screens to manage difficult moments.

“What stood out was the importance of caregivers’ own stress in decisions about how screen media is used by their children,” said Enid Moreira, lead author of the study and an FIU psychology doctoral student. “This is important because it points to the need to support caregivers as much as children.”

What RFK is essentially doing is blaming the symptom for the problem, classic fascism.

In conclusion, this study demonstrated a significant association between parental psychological symptoms—particularly depression—and odds of more than 2 h of screen time among children. The family environment, as the primary context for children’s growth and development, was identified as a critical determinant of screen-related behaviors. Our findings highlight the importance of addressing parental psychological symptoms as a potential factor associated with excessive screen use in children. Future interventions aimed at reducing screen time should prioritize strategies to support parental mental health, with a specific focus on mitigating depressive symptoms, alongside fostering healthy family dynamics.

The post title vs your write-up had me going, I initially thought RFK was actually recommending better mental health support to counteract bad parenting habits instead of the usual run-of-the-mill moralising about screen time.

One of my big hot takes is that being a new parent with a full time job and no assistance from an extended family can cause behavioural changes on par with neurological impairment and bad habits which can carry on even as the kids grow up and things get slightly more normal, so it’s nice to see a version of that in published paper form.

It also causes me no end of rage as a parent that this message is coming from this administration in particular since their policies are at least half the reasons why we aren’t getting out in the world more. Like, my family has queer and trans people in it and the administration have explicitly aligned themselves with and empowered people for whom that is a reason we shouldn’t be a family. The cuts they’ve made to childhood vaccine access and the way they’ve boosted antivax bullshit means that my immunocompromised wife can rely that much less on the population’s herd immunity. The ongoing economic fuckery and cost of living crisis that they’ve inflamed through their pointless goddamn war in Iran and general incompetence have greatly increased the costs of getting to anywhere in ‘real life’, especially since the communities we can trust in light of the above are pretty geographically scattered compared to like 15 years ago. But yeah, the problem is the screens somehow.
