The fall of the Western Roman Empire, also called the fall of the Roman Empire or the fall of Rome, was the loss of central political control in the Western Roman Empire, a process in which the Empire failed to enforce its rule, and its vast territory was divided among several successor polities. The Roman Empire lost the strengths that had allowed it to exercise effective control over its Western provinces; modern historians posit factors including the effectiveness and numbers of the army, the health and numbers of the Roman population, the strength of the economy, the competence of the emperors, the internal struggles for power, the religious changes of the period, and the efficiency of the civil administration. Increasing pressure from invading peoples outside Roman culture also contributed greatly to the collapse. Climatic changes and both endemic and epidemic diseases drove many of these immediate factors.

The disintegration of the Western Roman Empire unfolded gradually during the Migration Period (c. 400–800 CE), as waves of migrating and invading peoples reshaped Europe. After the death of Theodosius I (reign 379–395 CE), the last emperor to govern both East and West, the empire was formally divided, leaving the weaker Western half vulnerable. Over the following decades, military defeats, economic strain, and internal instability combined with external pressures from Visigoths, Vandals, Huns, and other groups, eroding imperial authority. The conventional “fall” is often dated to 476 CE, when Romulus Augustulus (reign 475–476) was deposed, or to 480 CE, with the assassination of Julius Nepos (reign 474–480), the last legitimate Western emperor.

Yet Roman power and traditions did not vanish overnight. Latin remained the language of administration, Roman law and coinage persisted, and successor kingdoms drew heavily on Roman models of governance and military organization. Italy, Gaul, Hispania, and North Africa came under the control of groups such as the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Vandals, and later the Franks, who both disrupted and assimilated Roman traditions. Rather than a sudden collapse, the Migration Period marked a protracted transformation, blending imperial legacies with emerging medieval political and cultural structures that would define Western Euroasia’s future.

I fucking haaaaaate Android so much.

I found an article from just four months ago about Waydroid that’s all like

The moment Waydroid really made sense was when I launched my first Android app and watched it appear in its own window on the Linux desktop.

Not a tiny phone frame, or a simulated device screen. Just a regular window, sitting comfortably alongside everything else I had opened.

I could move it between workspaces, resize it, and interact with it using my keyboard and mouse like any other application. Copy and paste worked between Android apps and Linux apps. Notifications appeared in ways that felt familiar rather than foreign.

and so I installed it on Arch and told it to initialise a minimal Android and sure enough, it launched a simulated device screen with bad mouse controls and no graphical settings menu that lagged like fuck. Terminal commands wouldn’t work (the waydroid shell claimed waydroid was missing or unavailable?) and I couldn’t get apps to fullscreen. 10/10.

If you wanna watch Youtube on a TV, I can resolutely say that running Smarttube via some android emulator is not the fucking way.

Friend of mine decided to Facebook post about her kid getting told to cover up his Kill Your Local Pedophile shirt on the first day of school. Like, yeah, that’s gonna happen. She’s an anarchist an believes her her kid can wear what he wants etc whichbi agree with, but yes, the shirt thst advocates vigilante murders isnt allowed at school. Apparently other kids have gotten away with worse shirts that say ‘I <3 milfs’ etc, which also shouldnt be allowed. Get the school on that, dont make a fuss when your kid’s cringe shirt gets censored for obvious reasons.

  • So I asked in !c/technology the other day about VPNs and it finally gave riseup a whirl. You’re telling me they offer this for free at point of use??? It’s so fast at times I’m throttled by my router???

The downside is the apps are dogass. The linux app has weird theming and spams you for permission to do anything, while the mobile app is a bit less janky-looking. I might see how hard it would be to do a fork with the frontend in Flutter…

No but for real the bar for security is very low, the guy in this job before me apparently slept in his car all shift and sold coke to customers

God I hate how much weight chud’s cultural sensibilities get as national priorities.

25% of the US population is functionally unemployed, everything now is a luxury except for labor, which some bureaucrat decided should be free, climate crisis is currently fucking up the earth, some random item from grocery stores has to be recalled….but forget all that!

Some gullible hog was watching youtube with his mouth open and an influencer said trans people bad! So that’s the national talking point.

CHUDs have become everything they claimed to hate about libs.

In the new GTA there should be an alternate story where you refuse your life of crime and start getting shifts either in the service industry or as a construction worker (there’s a secret path where you manage to get a decent job in financial services). Then you work there for 8–12 in-game hours an in-game day, 6 days an in-game week. And, assuming you successfully complete the rent/house payment minigame every month and your RNG on the yearly medical check-up is good, then after 40 in-game years you get put in a care facility and the bank seizes everything you own and your kids never call.

If you followed the secret path it’s the same ending but the facility is nicer and your oldest child gets the house instead.

But if you watch the four hours of end credits then you get a special Metroidvania-style game where your soul battles through the underworld. If you succeed then the game starts over.

I like placeholder fox and kinda like the mismatch with the links awakening looking other stuff. Orange and green is an underrated color combo

The final aesthetic I’m going for is “game boy color”, my idea is kind of a take on Pokemon where you have one Pokemon and you can evolve them mid battle back and forth between a bunch of forms. But yeah all my sprites are definitely going to have the game boy palette and then I’m going to just apply filters to them like the actual hardware did.

Boss is on vacation and the guy filling in ends his first email message to everyone with.

“Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

I don’t feel like bringing it up but there’s a 100% chance he’d say he didn’t realize it was a trump thing. He’s ignorant enough about the world around him for that to be plausible, but he’s also the kind of dipshit asshole that would intentionally do that to fuck with people and act like they’re the weird ones for noticing or bringing it up.
