German study analysing EU-27 data reveals growing desire for European independence

A recent study shows that an increasing number of EU citizens want greater independence from the US and a stronger capacity for Europe to act.

  • 73% of EU citizens now believe that Europe should act more independently of the United States in the future. In 2024, this figure stood at 63 per cent.

  • At the same time, the study shows that the growing distance from the US is not reflected in a closer relationship with China. China continues to be viewed with widespread scepticism. 77% are in favour of reducing economic and political dependencies – even if this could entail economic disadvantages.

      Because it is a lot. Polls are traditionally really conservative, because retired and jobless* people have time to participate in polls.

      *: This shouldn’t imply that jobless people don’t work to get a new job. They just are home at different times of the day.

        I don’t know, I’ve heard some other places that polls slightly skew progressive. Especially if they’re only online-based.

    That is good to hear. The EU NEEDS to be more independent; you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket (ehhh, American obviously). Good luck to y’all and I hope my shithole country can someday at least be on the same side as you again (we should be civil even if we can’t understandably be friends).

    Not shocked by this at all. The EU is going to have to learn to take care of itself — other powers only look out for their own interests, and Europe can’t keep counting on anyone else to watch its back
