I like how exactly 90 days after SpaceX would have had to abide by the NASDAQ rules they changed, all the AI CEOs suddenly call for a slow down so they don’t get blamed for the economic hit they know is coming.

“But we had to slow down to keep everyone safe.”

No, you need to blame safety and get the public on board to avoid the pitchforks when you inevitably tank the global economy because you’ve overexposed the entire world to your carelessness. …again.

This is a distraction from the real problems AI is causing, and is ignoring a direct connection between AI and the people in power.

These are not two separate issues, they are one in the same. Saying that people are just trying to distract us by making us afraid of AI is conspiratorial. The 1% love AI and want people to love it, and aren’t using it as a distraction for the masses. If anything AI is helping some people realize the direct cause of their problems, the rich.

I find this message to be counter productive at best.

Have nuance. You are correct. But also not. AI is simply one of the means of production which means that it will inherently change labor relations. This is what OP is talking about. Being anti AI for the sake of being anti AI is dumb. Being anti AI because it is being used to prop up a dying parasite class is a more balanced point of view. That is the point of the post (not communicated very well though).

This same argument can be extended to literally any technology developed under capitalism which is what makes it nonsensical. The focus on technology is deeply misguided because this is fundamentally a social problem.

    ignoring climate change

More like being responsible for two thirds of all climate change, and ensuring nobody else can do anything about it.

One of them actually said on camera that they’ll kill us by the end of the decade but at least they’ll make us a lot of money first. It’s like real life isn’t even trying anymore.

AI as a technology is not a problem. AI in the hands of rich and powerful sociopaths is another matter.

Exactly. One silly use for ai I use is :

“I forget what season of game of thrones I was one before I stopped watching. I want to watch again. What season did I leave off on?”

AI: here’s theee events that happen in the show. Which do you remember?… okay now here’s three more events… okay you’re on season 4 episode 2”

I have no idea were else I could do that. I’m not willing to ruin the world for that feature but it’s a good feature.

It’s a tool like any other. Who uses the tool is the problem.

I think, in this case, two things can be true. The ruling class is and has been killing us with wars, legislating people into starvation, etc. They’re also hoping to kill us with their llms next.

      two things can be true.

Oh my god please stop with these thought terminating cliches. AI is just a symptom of what the teal guy is saying. LLMs are not killing people capitalism and imperialism are.

I keep seeing my fellow leftist use this term, and frequently incorrectly

Two things can be true at the same time isn’t a thought terminating cliche if they immediately explain their position and why they see both things as true. Something being an aphorism does not make it a thought terminating cliche.

Take the following position: Gen ai only has hypothetical value as a novel form of labor exploitation for which there are no regulatory guardrails. It is a tool of the ruling class that will do harm, just like the long list of other exploitative harms created by imperialism and capitalism. It is a new and shiny way for capitalism to harm and exploit people, and people are right to be concerned about it.

Even if you dont agree with the position I just expressed or feel its a less helpful framing than “its the capitalism doing the harm, not the ai capitalism is building”, theres no logical falacy in it just because I’m saying “two things are both true simultaneously”

A thought terminating cliche is only thought terminating if it enables the speaker to dismiss cognitive dissonance without resolving it

AI is not the problem here and that is what you are dismissing. It is a symptom of larger problems. Saying “both can be true at once” implies you accept the premise put forward by the techbros pitching AI as this all powerful technology we must compete to control or it will somehow of its own volition kill us.

“AI” has no agency. It is not sentient it is not killing us, the people that own the machines are killing us with or without it. AI is not killing us nor can it because it does not exist. LLMs are not killing us any more than predictive autocomplete on your phone is killing us.

Disagreeing with someone’s framing or way of looking at an issue doesn’t mean theres cognitive dissonance they’re failing to resolve.

And broadly I agree, but the fact that ai has no agency doesnt mean it doesnt create a negative possibility that would otherwise be harder without it existing. Predictive autocomplete has not, at scale, meaningfully cut down on the number of jobs available in any industries, otherwise people would be stressed about it just like they are AI, and as people had been with automation.

If someone is a murderer and they kill a person its them being a murderer thats wrong and the source of the death, but if someone gave the murderer a gun they otherwise wouldn’t have had access to, their doing murder is now easier and more lethal. AI enables capitalism to do more harm. It is not the ai that is the root cause of the harm, but it does stands to potentially make harmful exploitation easier and more accessible. Comparing it to predictive auto complete isn’t a very good comparison.

And again, disagreeing with how someone is thinking about something doesnt mean that any aphorism they use becomes a thought terminating cliche. There is no dissonance between “capitalism is doing harm” and “ai is doing harm as a product of the way capitalism is using it”, and its not at all unreasonable for someone to say “ai is doing harm” as a way of describing the way it enables harm

We should absolutely talk about how capitalism is the root of the harm and I think the point this meme is trying to make is correct (though I don’t think it makes it especially well), but telling everyone and their mother they’re using a thought terminating cliche every 5 minutes is an unproductive way of doing so, and isnt even likely to make sense to most people, nevermind make the connection between the harm and capitalism more salient.

They killed us with the combustion engine in tanks too. The technology exists now. I don’t like nukes but nukes are real and people are going to have them. We can’t go back. Now we are in an AI Cold War. It will pass…or end the world. It’s something we have to deal with now. Going back isn’t an option anymore.

Sorry what exactly are you asking? that we are in a Cold War with AI?

The major world powers are racing to have the best AI for mostly defense and war regions.

China doesn’t want America to have better AI America doesn’t want China to have better AI.

Much like the Cold War and building the biggest nuke.

I’m not saying it’s proven whoever has the best ai will have a major advantage… but it appears everyone in power believes that is the case.

Much like the Cold War and nukes. Whoever has the best and most wins.
