I’ve heard those contradictions spouted by single people on multiple occasions - whether they’re lying, morons, or both, they’re a danger.
Not sure about the country as a whole, but at least in my experience the republicans I know would never have said they thought he tried to begin with. Usually they see the capital riots as something beyond what Trump was expecting, as untrue as that has come been shown to be.
My father still thinks the insurrection was just a handful of people waving flags outside the Capitol. They never got the story because they are hooked on Fox news
