It really is a joke. I remember a decade ago talking about how pirated movies were a better user experience than buying a DVD because they were making you sit through ads on the paid product before you could view it, but the pirated product just let you get to what you were watching immediately.
The whole experience is completely backward!
In the end I was finally so PO’d with my Blu Ray needing to update copyright protections and download the latest trailers before doing anything I switch to having a PC connected to my TV instead and threw out the Blu-ray.
I just wanted to sit down for a movie or dinner without screwing around or finishing my meal long before the movie even starts.
With streaming services that came later it was much easier to do that again. However with the cable-ification of the streaming services that PC on my TV is looking pretty good again…
Get a cheap chromecast, install stremio https://www.stremio.com/downloads install torrentio add on for stremio https://torrentio.strem.fun/configure
Enjoy a Netflix like experience with everything available in one place. In fact do this even if you use a pc, I just recommend chromecast because I like having a standard remote to control it.
I’m going to check this out. Currently I cast streaming videos from my laptop to my Chromecast built into my TV.
YouTube videos aren’t paid products (and if you do pay there are supposedly no ads), so it’s not the same thing. But regardless, the frequency of the ads is insufferable!
The paid service will start without ads, and then they’ll put them in just at the beginning and end for a video, then they’ll ad them in like they are now and blame rising operational costs.
The playbook has been out in the open for a while now.
We have an entire generation now that grew up seeing this happen everywhere. Its so blindingly obvious this is “just the way internet stuff works”
It was also the way that cable TV “worked”. Didn’t stop people from cutting the cord to get away. Didn’t stop the rise of the Ad-Blocker.

Shoutout to his Odysee channel.
The unstoppable you wouldn’t download a car
Kinda ironic that they put anti-piracy PSAs on DVDs. Like, you obviously bought the movie, but don’t you dare pirate it!
With 3D printers, you now CAN download a car.
How’s it backwards for YouTube? You pay to not see ads. Seems like that’s what you want.
it even happens with paid Amazon prime now. I just started a movie, got an ad. Stopped it and restarted it, got the same ad.
Big tech is making SNAFU a reality for streaming.
Don’t happen on pirating websites, I was told
I heard it certainly does happen on pirate streaming sites on iPad 😒
Pirating things on an iPad is one of the worst ways to do it, I hate the workaround we have with Stremio…
I’d like the Jailbreak scene to make a great comeback, so it can help with all these annoyances… Or Apple widely supports sideloading at least.
I love my iPad for many reasons - especially with Apple Pencil and procreate - but yeah it sucks for pirating. I didn’t realise how used to shutting down 6 new pop up windows every time I touched the screen I had become until my mum got one and I tried to teach her how to use pirate sites. After she called me in a panic about “the cartoon pornography I’d infected her iPad with” I gave up and signed up for an IPTV for us to share instead. It’s got a really decent vod library that’s updated regularly so it will do the trick for now.
What does that stand for?
Situation normal: all fucked up
Lol amazon prime video is paid now unless you want ads. I pay for prime but im going to have to pirate thw boys now because fuck that

I installed the newer version of revanced on my SO’s phone and after a while it started just like… stopping videos out of nowhere. By that point I forgot how to reinstall it, and didnt feel like relearning all that, so unfortunately it’s back to ad city :/
Updates should have fixed that issue. I was getting it for a while too.
I can’t remember how to update unfortunately.
They have a discord server that’s pretty active. I know you have to first get the Revanced Manager, then download the recommended YouTube apk, and then patch it through the Manager
Yeah it needs to be updated every once in a while. I’ve been on the same build for a few weeks with no issues thankfully.
Same. I haven’t updated in over 2 weeks with no issues at all.
You don’t use ublock origin?
Well I do on my computer, but is it on android as well?
Yeah, I use Firefox with ublock origin and all YouTube videos open through ff, which is superior to the app.
On Firefox, yeah
In my experience libretube with default instances is bad, I couldn’t even watch a single video without buffering every 3 minutes for a minute.
With a selfhosted instance however, libretube is perfect
This is the GOAT IMHO, it is worth it even if you pay for YT premium.
Thankfully YouTube outs itself with the “most replayed” graph in the video timeline.
You can just skip right to the peak which is always right after the sponsor bit.
yeah but sponsorblock can identify more: intros, filler content, self promotion, non music parts of a music video… also has a highlight indicator which skips to the most relevant part.
these are crowdsourced so not 100% but still pretty good

Adblockers time is coming to an end sadly. If it isn’t this round, eventually someone is going to make it impossible to use the Internet with an adblocker.
Money owns the internet and money wants more money.
Lol sure the entire open source community is just gonna give up. You called it.
Only a jabroni would have a laptop on the kitchen table while they eat

After working in IT support for years I can assure you that is probably very common. One fat guy named Mel had the dirtiest keyboard I’ve ever seen and it was absolutely repulsive. Glad I don’t deal with those disgusting slobs anymore.
Gatekeeping where someone can use thier laptop in their own home seems wack. Although, I’d advise to not use it in the shower.
Only a jabroni would think that was wack
What’s up jabroni
Not using an adblocker?

Unskippable ads.
Fuck you Tom Brady
…why would I watch YouTube for entertainment though? Probably an episode of Doctor Who to catch up before the 23rd. Also, I own a television.
It’s still baffles me that people still say that YouTube has been around for decades now. There is all sorts of interesting content creators. It is an old family guy reruns.
If you think YouTube is boring that’s on you for not finding interesting content, and watching crap instead which means that the algorithm just offers you more crap.
Find what you’re interested in and watch it and then the algorithm will start recommending other stuff along the same lines maybe subscribe to a few channels I think I’m literally subscribed to hundreds of channels. I barely ever watched stuff the algorithm suggests any more because I found pretty much a constant stream of good quality content creators.
Far more interesting youtube creators than almost everything on television, esp. after the writer strike. Less commercials, skip capability, que capability. Television has been obsolete for many of us for over a decade. I honestly don’t understand why anyone still pays for cable unless they are over 70.
Idk but I just realised my idea of entertainment are video essays, free online class courses, educational videos, movie critiques and cat videos
Personally I prefer documentaries, educational content and investigative journalism. YouTube excels for these genres, especially since PBS is primarily using YouTube these days.
I stopped watching TV. YouTube is my TV nowadays (and Nebula). I still don’t see ads on YouTube thankfully, and Nebula is paid for so they don’t need ads.
Nothing, I own a room big enough for a TV.
So you’re watching ads on your TV instead?
Hopefully he is using Smart Tube Next.
Congratulations
Ok? I watch YouTube on my TV all the time
Hell yeah

Nothing like ad blocking and good ol piracy
Who even uses laptops anymore?
Edit: got the Laptop Gestapo in my notifs for this one
People that own laptops would be my guess.
Confirmed, I own a laptop and also use it
I have mine HDMIed to the TV. It’s great
Is that scaling your brains resolution down? Because I prefer to think I’m at least 8k.

You might be on to something
You don’t you it up to your TV?
Yes i do, but why would it help in this case?
Elaborate
Money can be exchanged for laptops
What’s wrong with laptops?
Nothings wrong with them, they just occupy a similar place in my mind as a tablet: Once popular for casual use but ended up as an awkward middle grounds between mobile phones and desktops that are now only used for business or school work.
You clearly don’t have any school-aged children.
See: “or school work.”
Okay, but that’s a giant market. There were 75.2 million students enrolled in the U.S. in 2022. That’s 75.2 million potential notebook users even if their school systems don’t offer that. So I think there’s a justifiable market.

Most people. What the hell do you use?
Custom PC as main and two i7 Intel NUCs as seedbox and HTPC.
On your table while you eat? 🤨
People who need a portable computer. Tablets haven’t quite advanced far enough to replace them entirely.
I imagine lots of people, otherwise why do they keep making them.
You should try viewing the world from a different perspective other than your own. There are billions of us, each living equally as important lives as yours.
fuckers with limited space so potentially 99% of people
And cats.
People who can afford more than one room and want a computer in each.
Edit: got the Laptop Gestapo in my notifs for this one
Big Laptop trying to shut down the speakers of truth!
Lol it’s funny, because it is true
what are you watching first?
Extremely presumptuous that it will be a video on your platform, YouTube.

I’m on kbin so my reports go to Ernest. Any lemmings care to report this spam on my behalf?
My bad, I didn’t even click it. Spam deleted, user banned.
And mega-banned with all their spammy posts dispatched to the Void.
Good work mega-banner!
It was the mega-ban hammer that did the hard work.
I’m still seeing it :(
As I understand it, it takes time to take effect across all instances because of the nature of the fediverse. That’s why if you’re a mod it’s best to use an account registered on the same instance as the community you’re moderating. At least that’s what someone told me!
Done. I got you covered.
Cheers. It give us Admins a ping too so we can scrub all their activity and ban them sitewide.
I reported it using Sync for Lemmy, what is that though.
No clue, all I can tell you is that it’s based out of Iceland and created in February. I’d click on it if I were willing to accept the nearly assured malware.
No ads. Newpipe FTW.
