specifically : a historical process by which the semantic and connotative status of a word tends to decline
In what world is the Wall Street Journal “liberal media”? The same WSJ owned/run by Rupert Murdoch and his son? Or is there another one?
American conservatives are also liberals. Liberalism is a center-right ideology.
Only in the US. Out here in the rest of the world you’re deep into the right…
The cognitive dissonance is so rampant here. It’s enough to just try to stay sane.
The origin of Liberal is as the alternative to Absolutist - basically a monarchist.
The concept of Liberalism is compatible with either right (laissez-faire) or left economic theories. The term generally isn’t used this way today, but in reality just about all Western political parties are liberal.
Liberalism is a center-right ideology.
I wouldn’t say that - even fascists don’t fetishize capitalism and their precious private property to the extent that liberals do.
The word liberal lost all meaning in the media as soon as Trump started misusing to attack his enemies and every outlet just ran with it.
Thought Bezos bought it as a mouthpiece?
Edit: ah wait it was the Washington Post
Wall Street is in New York. New York is liberal AF.
Liberal media
Wall Street Journal
Pick one.
Why is it liberal media when wall Street journal is right leaning and Adam Kirsch doesn’t have any posted political affiliations?
Because OP is the worst. Perpetually online and perpetually unpopular
I saw this photograph of a printed article someone posted earlier. The comments called that person out for cropping out the actual article, which was measured and nuanced, and using the headline as ragebait. Dude here just elevating to the next level of ignorant
Thanks. I hadn’t read the actual article due to paywall.
“I’m mad about an article I didn’t read” holy shit beyond parody XD
Like it’s a meme or something.
We need more bad faith “memes” in the world, thanks bud for your help 👍
Hey TB, do you occasionally throw out comments from a [far] right perspective, and perhaps subsequently delete them?
You certainly ruffle feathers, but it would be unique behavior to be such a prolific left-wing poster yet sometimes randomly do the opposite. Have been enjoying Lemmy and feel it’s worth digging into potential unconventional uses of the platform.
That would be in bad faith and trolling.
Because TokenBoomer is a rightwing shill, posts nothing but anti-leftwing stuff pretending its all #BothSides.
Everything I’ve seen from OP leads me to believe they are leftist. Care to cite an example of them shilling for the right?
Centrists have this thing where they accuse anyone to their left of being all the way to their right.
neoliberalism is right wing.
democrats as not leftists.
Looks like a typical agitprop/anger amplifier news spammer
Guess it says something about me that I enjoy all their posts lol
Thanks, that means a lot to me. I enjoy your comments.
That’s a lot of labels
You’re at +6/-6 at 3hr in. Wonder if those six downvoters checked for themselves or assumed you were fibbing.
One thing I love about being on this instance is I’m blissfully unaware because downvotes are disabled. This is what I see.
American Democrats think anyone who criticizes their actions – such as opening more concentration camps, continuing Trump’s wall (yes, that wall), arming genocidal states, and taking power away from the working class – anyone who criticizes these things MUST be a right-wing shill.
I’m not joking. That’s really what they think. I get it all the time. Hence the downvotes, and hence the unfounded claims about OP.
Ahh…
So satisfying, on the other hand, to see posts reach +400 without dissent…
Everyone liked that!
It also gives a good town hall kind of feel, like I get a sense of how many people are in the room and how many are shaking their heads.
Yo peep their post history.
• Pro-Obama voter (plan saved her life)
• Capitalism lead to modern slavery in chocolate production
• Police kill 10k family dogs a year
Pro-Obama. Anti-Capitalism. Anti-Police Brutality.
Maybe you’re thinking of someone else or I didn’t dig deep enough?
He sanitizes his post history. I’ve had several interactions with him to the point that I remember his name. Everything in my inbox that has his name says that content can’t be found.
Might be wrong to ask for screenshots since folks should be allowed to have some agency there… when they’re not being abusive… What were you discussing?
Saw this amongst tons of left-wing content and pro-Palestine views, but not sure what the original posts were:
Will keep an eye out.
Is this gang-stalking? Why are you concerned about a person on the internet?
lies about being a far left wing supporter and deletes far-right view comments and posts so they can claim their post history supports far-left ideas
people get screenshots of their far right-views before they’re deleted
surprised Pikachu face wHy ArE yOu StAlKiNg Me?!??My brother in Christ, if you’re far right wing just go chill in the communities that support that viewpoint instead of trying to make the rest of lemmy toxic with this “I’m a super-left socialist and you’re bad or wrong if you don’t agree with me” thing that fox news believes is how real liberals or socialists act
My brother in Christ
I’m an Atheist, so…
A 2016 article in The New York Times estimated that more than 10,000 people were participating in online communities “organized around the conviction that its members are victims of a sprawling conspiracy to harass thousands of everyday Americans with mind-control weapons and armies of so-called gang stalkers”.
You got me with the mind control.
I’ll “keep an eye out” for my own edification… are you of multiple minds? Is there a user with a similar username? You doing a study? Are others upset you’re pro-Palestine? etc., whatever it could be.
I investigated complaints that I was incredulous of. There are like seven of us on this platform, early days… good to understand how it’s being used. For example I went through some of those defederated instances (cannot recommend).
And I guess I do care about you based on sticking up for your post history earlier. Your user experience is important.
Thanks for sticking up for me.I just don’t understand the personal attacks and fascination with me. I’m just a guy that posts things I like for content. If people don’t like it, ignore it, downvote it, or report it. But to attack a user and make them out to be something they are not is abusive and immature. I can read the comments, they can ask me questions.
Or, the mods delete my post/comments. I have deleted posts from a bad information source. If I delete this post right now, what would it say in your inbox?
What’s wrong with people deleting posts that they don’t agree with / don’t want public?
For me to be rightwing, you would have to be a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist.
From a socialist’s perspective, WSJ is liberal media.
Curious to hear about the mental gymnastics required to make moderate-conservative into liberal media. That’s like hearing Trump say CNN is a conservative news org because it’s moderate-left
Does the Wall Street Journal want to abolish capitalism? No? Then it’s liberalism.
“liberal” is used here as in neoliberal, which is rightwing and capitalist.
also in the us, democrats lean slightly right of center.
Again, if you want to conserve capitalism, you’re a liberal to Socialists. I understand classical, libertarian, social, neoliberal definitions. The consensus among socialists is that liberalism supports capitalism.
This is close to what I meant.
Again, if you want to conserve capitalism, you’re a liberal to Socialists.
Sooo what you’re saying is that Socialists think conservatives are liberals?
Yes, in the sense they also believe in the neoliberal free-market and private-property capitalism. This also means liberals are still right wing, albeit much further to the left than conservatives.
Both conservatives and so-called liberals believe in free market capitalism, despite having radically different points of view when it comes to social issues like racism, poverty, guns etc. Socialists agree with left-leaning liberals on the vast majority of social issues btw.
In a nutshell, if you think really good representatives could fix most of the issues with capitalism as it stands you are a liberal/neoliberal. If you think the current capitalist system can’t be fixed by just changing the players without changing the game you are a leftist/socialist. You can go further left than you might be used to, this is where this confusion comes from.
Socialists think conservatives are liberals?
It’s not that we think that… it’s just that we don’t really see much of a difference.
it says the term has lost impact, I agree. Doesn;t mean it should be ‘retired’ but I get the point.
Other words have also lost impact. ‘Democracy’ comes to mind. I live in a dictatorship that on a daily basis call themselves a Peoples’ Democracy, and half the world agrees
Liberalism is another one. From Wikipedia
Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, right to private property and equality before the law.
It’s bizarre to see knee-jerk reactions to something if it is described as “a tennet of liberalism”. They will rail against the values of the founding fathers who were, in this sense, liberals. Now I don’t care too much arguments of founding principles, but to see these people, who claim the constitution is inspired by God, bash liberalism in the context of governing philosophies is infuriating.
I don’t think the wrong use of the word has led to it losing impact, just people are more comfortable using it. A lot of people think genocide is like, the Holocaust, but nobody actually needs to die for something to be genocide. It can refer to the destruction of culture or religion within a specific group as well. Like sending first nation children to residential schools. Even if no one died in that process it was genocide by trying to eliminate the culture.
People are just more comfortable with using the word as it is defined as, rather than just the really treacherous stuff like Nazi Germany and Rwanda.
Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
© Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group
I like how the C became a copyright symbol.
Same with racist. Facist. Nazi. Transphobe. I even have to fight back rolling my eyes at the word “rape.”
All of it, all of it, completely lost impact. Can’t help but think it’s some sort of larger strategy of some kind, and those who spew these words like candy are little unaware chess players leading to their own demise.
Oh look… a fascist desperately hoping we forget what the term fascist means.
Yeah… not going to happen.
Lol, proving my point, I see.
I’m going to assume this is not the first time you have had your fascist sympathies pointed out to you?
Hypernormalisation by Adam Curtis is what you’re talking about. Watch the full documentary on YouTube.
Congo?
Nope. I’ll give you a hint. One of the three main communist dictatorship in Latin America (currently)
Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word “no”.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betteridge’s_law_of_headlines
Well WSJ is center or center left depending on the day and who you ask. That’s the point though, to lend credibility and provide cover for their solidly right editorial/opinion pieces.
OPs meme is the perfect example of how this is supposed to work, confusing the source and shifting the window with people that aren’t aware. “This is a liberal media news source, so this must be an accepted opinion in liberal media circles”
WSJ was center-right before it got bought up by the Murdochs, and while its news coverage hasn’t drifted too far post-acquisistion, its editorial page has slumped noticeably in the direction of Fox News.
The WSJ editorial staff called a bike share program “totalitarian communism”. The program was run by CitiBank.
They are unhinged conservatives. They just don’t always let their privates hang out the way Alex Jones does.
Betteridge’s law of headlines
No
Is WSJ liberal? I thought it was right wing corpo propaganda?
To a socialist, it’s all liberal.
News? Centrist (e.g., see their 2021 coverage of The Facebook Files).
Opinion? Oh boy…
“We will do ANYTHING to get this genocide done without akwnowledging it being a genocide.”
Where does it show WSJ on the newspaper?
The article is from the WSJ.
Well you didn’t bother taking a picture of the newspaper logo so obviously I had to question it, because I hate misinformation
Google
See, I said Google, before I read that someone else had said it. So I’m gonna delete it, and “sanitize “ my history. /s
It would have been faster to Google it
Tbf, the word has lost a lot of meaning and power to it
I swear a month ago people on lemmy understood that conservatives were liberals
Some people don’t know what they don’t know.
