Can Lemmy do anything besides post about Elon, Threads, Zuckerberg, and Reddit? Is it just a bunch of bots spamming the place?

I came here to avoid all that shit, not talk about it.

And I kindly suggest you create a create a community called “billionaire drama and promotion” for all this low quality content so technology can actually be about tech.

No reason we can’t hope the technology community would be more varied, more about actual technological substance, and not just “top tech company drama”

Yes, there is very good reason not to hope that: past experience. The major big tent communities/subreddits all look the same.

What’s your favorite tent community? Looking for input on getting a Coleman, but I’m open for suggestions.

I got a 4 person Coleman Sun Dome for $29 “used” on Amazon. The box was never even opened.

to be fair you can subscribe/unsubscribe from communities. I often do this. If /c/news is too political, i unsub from /c/news, i can then go and find some other news community that posts interesting things that aren’t as political

similarly, /c/technology@lemmy.world is not the only technology community out there, as is obvious, so we can go and find other things :) your feed is yours! own it! don’t wait for others to fix it cuz you’ll very often be dissatisfied.

It seems like the best way is view “all” not just local, and block shit you don’t want to see as you come across.

I’ve gotten rid of most of the meme subs, formula 1, subs for languages I dont speak, or just any topic I don’t care about.

If I see something I’m interested in, I subscribe. Eventually I’ll have enough to just view subscribed, but this way I get to see what s out there

if you’re not subbed to a lot of stuff yeah but i already got to the point you mention where i have a shitton of subs and i get good curated content in my feed.

having said that i do browse All often and did in this case to find this post.

How exactly do you look for news which aren’t political, when news are inherently political? That’s like eating sugarless sugar.

ah yes “Dogs found to carry a gene that lets them bark in ultrasonic waves that mice cannot hear” (fake news title), omg so political. That’s the kind of shit I want sometimes. I don’t know how you came up to the idea that all news is about what political parties and the ruling class are doing in their day to day lives :) I do love some news about how putin is screwing up something, but I also want news about new cool apps, new developments in technology or AI, new cool stuff found around the world, new opportunities and things in this cool world. Sometimes, just sometimes, I don’t wanna hear about what insults Trump is hurling at Biden and viceversa.

You are aware that “political” doesn’t mean “related to elections”, right? Choosing to eat a snack in the sidewalk is a political statement, as it is a public choice made in the polis (city)

OK then my showers are political and my water drinking and air breathing habits are political. I am, for obvious reasons, not using those measures when I talk about apolitical news.

Then post about shit you want to talk about. Or just scroll past the ones you don’t want to talk about. No one is forcing you to enter threads (ah fuck meta for making that statement ambiguous) and comment.

It’s all over Lemmy. A huge chunk of content here is about social media. Twitter, Reddit, Threads, Musk, Zuckerberg, the fediverse, Lemmy development, Kevin development.

Those are all decent topics to address, but that’s half my feed on here even after curation.

I get your frustration, but this is like going to a party where there’s a bunch of different conversations going on, mingling through some of them and then joining a group of people having one conversation and asking everyone to stop this conversation without even offering an alternative.

And at this kind of party, you don’t even have to stop your current conversation to begin a new one, so these topics don’t need to stop to make room for others, the others can just start up in parallel.

But this stuff is fascinating, like billionaire Jerry Springer only instead of yelling at each other about whose kid can play on which playground, their battleground is online platforms and two players are seeing how much they can light their platform on fire without everyone leaving while the other is popping up in new places saying, “if you just start out completely on fire, no one will notice unless they stop and look around, but then you just target people where the idea of looking too closely at anything terrifies them to their core and they won’t give a shit even if your conversations about how dumb they are for trusting you leak.”

Your first paragraph makes it seem like you didn’t even read my comment. Not interested in a condescending conversation.
