Hail corporate and all that.
With a garage full of cheap-to-not-cheap tools, many made by Stanley-Black & Decker, and many of those dremeled to use the same batteries because I specifically researched their brands and market segmentation, I’m a bit nonplussed that I was today years old when I figured it out.
Stanley, the cup company, didn’t even make the Stanley Cup.
that’s fucking bullshit
Although, the Stanley Quencher is about the same size as the coveted hockey prize.
And therefore just as impractical for daily use.
Unlike the beer and world record publisher.
Or the tire and restaurant rating.
Not exactly the same, but Canada’s domestic shipping company, Purolator, always hit my American ears oddly, and sure enough, it is related to the American oil filter company. They diversified into automotive-adjacent industries in the 60s and 70s, and the name stuck even after the courier was sold off.

The restaurant rating is by the tire company. One and the same.
Yes, in case it wasn’t clear, that’s what I was trying to say. The “beer and world record publisher” are related. The “tire and restaurant rating” are related. Both unlike the Stanleys which are not.
woosh
Or the pepper mill and auto maker.
Stanley World Records
Stanley cups are made by a Seattle company that also makes all the starbucks cups, called PMI.
And PMI is owned by HAVI, a privately owned Indian conglomerate.
TIL there’s a company named Stanley that makes cups. I thought that hockey thing was named for a person.
It was, and his metal bowl has nothing to do with the metal cups or the metal tools.
Too many motherfucking Stanleys on this motherfucking continent.
That Stanley is cool.
Florida Stanley is even cooler
Don’t forget Stanley Yelnats
The rare correct use of “nonplussed.”
I felt pretty good when I typed it out, but I have to admit I looked it up before posting.
Don’t be afraid to admit that. I wish more people would think about their wording before hitting send.

It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America
Fredrick Stanley was an English Lord, and served as Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. During that time, his children took up ice hockey, of which him and his wife became fans. The cup was commissioned in 1892, and was originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. It was originally intended for the best amateur hockey club, but became exclusively for professional teams on 1909.
The original iteration of Stanley B&D, Stanley’s Bolt Manufactory, was founded in 1843 in the US. So while Stanley Tools are older than the cup, they are still unrelated.
Too many Stanleys.
One could write a parable about them
There’s also the Stanley Brothers of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company known for the Stanley Steamer steam-driven cars, and one of those brothers also built the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO!
And then there’s the carpet cleaner…
Stanley Steemer
Not to be confused with Stanley Steamer steam vehicles.
Them fuckers ain’t even got any actual Stanleys!
🎶 Tough on dirt, gentle on carpet… 🎶
While it followed forty years of SNL tradition by going on way too long, that was pretty spot-on.

That blows my mind. Thanks for the factoid.
I’d always sort of vaguely heard it was a poorly selling product from a company that was mostly marketing to those working outdoors, and that completely tracked with my expectations, so I never dug in deeper. I mean, it’s not like they DON’T sell cups.
