Pasteurization was invented in the 1860s and they felt like they needed it then. Edit: Wikipedia says 1886 is when it was first suggested to pasteurize milk. So close enough.

Pasteurization was invented in the 1860s and they felt like they needed it then.
Edit: Wikipedia says 1886 is when it was first suggested to pasteurize milk. So close enough.
