Goodbye old house and old life!!! Onto the transitory period before the next big thing… interestingly just yesterday I hear from my cousin in regional Vic that they’re seriously considering moving (back) to WA…
E: I also wish to mention that my fingerprints aren’t working so well on my phones. Must’ve been cleaning too hard lol.
I loath going back to an empty place for the final clean. It’s an emotional kick especially when you got the place in a worse condition.
I can totally see why people just get bond cleaners to do the job. By that stage of the move you’re already exhausted and cranky. If you had to leave because you didn’t want to it’s easy to feel resentful when cleaning. I’m so glad it’s over. I never want to think about that place again now
I do too, but I want my own photographs. Not trusting any company cleaner to match to intake ones properly.
Oh wait so these bond cleaners do the photos as well? I figured I’d still take my own photos anyway after they’re done.
I’ll keep that in mind from when I move out of my current place…
Nice! Where are you moving to, if I may ask?
Have moved to a tiny musty old bachelor pad of depression in Richmond. It’s just a short term lease, hoping to gtfo as soon as uni is done. Possibly out of Melbourne or even Victoria. Definitely not inner city
Ooh, any ideas where you’re headed? Kinda can’t wait to join you, although I’m thinking more Europe than another state 😅
Can’t claim sewing course is going well. Nobody is horrid, but I’m highly dubious my result will fit, and can really do without the graphic prego stories!
Opposite result of hoped for really.
Well let me tell you about my prego story…
Nah I’m more interested in what you’re learning there?
So I saw one of the friends in the group that excluded me from their catch up last week. He was saying how we should plan another pot luck dinner with the group (that’s what we did the last time I saw them all) and have it at person X’s place. So maybe they felt bad I wasn’t with them last week? Who knows. I just acted dumb, said sure etc, no confrontation about why I wasn’t invited last week. Let’s see if it happens. I’ll forgive but I won’t forget!
i think i am in a long distance situationship and that is exactly right at this point of my life
Long-distanceship!!! 💜💜💜 Yaaaaaaasss girl!!!
❤️
so long as the long distance isn’t so long that you cant occasionally get into situational activities with them, sure! Edit: everyone deserves a good activity ever now and then.
We will be in nearby universes that makes activities possible
New firmware update for the pedal board!!!
5 new amp models and 4 of them are HIGH GAIIIIIN!!!
OK I’m all good now lol
I got that email as well. I’ll have to plug it into the computer when I get home
You have one?!?!?! Duuuuuuuuude!
I need to use it more but I am a proud helix owner
TRAAAAAAIIIIIINNNNNNNNNN
Thank you low :)
(Because I’ve been out of the loop/thread for much of the week and didn’t realise you were back…)
BAKKKKKUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! Welcome back!! 🎉🎉🎉
Also trains are awesome, but that’s just common knowledge :)
G’day Gregsy! How’s it all going?
Guess what just appeared on the BOM website
I may be in that tiny little circle of severe heatwave 😬
Great time to have a West facing bedroom!
Gonna just cop the air-conditioning bills this summer, I think.
Nooo
I have received some chocolates 🥰
They look a bit fancy!
They taste amazing!
Front middle one looks like a Phoenix egg. Make an omelette.
😂
Last day of leave :(
Buuuuut, only 4 weeks till another 3 weeks of leave!
god is it only 4 weeks till Christmas?
5 Weeks
So I think we can all agree that constant population growth is bad for the environment.
And yet our economy hinges on it.
So…why are we still doing it? Same for constant economic growth in general.
At some point human society needs to reorganise around something other than the “economy”.
The real problem imo is that the rich and shameless and/or powerful are stuck in an exploitative 19th century mindset, while the real world has moved on. Have you read Jared Diamond’s masterful depiction in Collapse - How Societies Choose to Survive or Choose to Fail? I found that book mindblowing. Also Tim Flannery’s The Future Eaters, which I regard as essential reading for anyone living in Australia rn. Some of the science is dated, but imo still valid in essence. And both authors are right on the money when it comes to how humans react to social stressors.
I hung out with Tim and his wife for a week in the far north of WA many years ago. They’re really cool and smart people. Bit of a secret: Tim is the famous one, but Alex is probably the smarter and cooler of the two. Shh! 😃
Jelly! That would have been fabulous! Tim has been one of my heroes for some time - glad to know Alex is up to his weight and then some.
I have not read these books however thankyou for the recommendation might try and check them out.
Ponzi scheme
It’s not just money, there are too people who don’t care so much about getting money as making other people suffer.
I don’t know what we can do about that other than have safety nets.
People like banging?
Birth control exists for a reason.
I finished reading the Expanse last night. I’ve not been that engaged with a book series since I discovered Tom Clancy as a 12 year old who was obsessed with Navy aircraft. Don’t really know what to read now… I saw an interview with Henry Cavill where he was asked his go to sci fi writers. Without hesitation the first thing he said was anything by Robert E Feist… So I guess I’ll try that…
Edit. Decided on Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.
God no. Not Feist. 😭
His women characters suck majorly. The only time he gets it right is The Empire Trilogy, and the only reason is because he collaborated with Janny Wurts (a woman).
If you do read his stuff, avoid Faerie Tale at all costs.
Major Spoiler for Faerie Tale and TW: Grape and SA
Pan raping a teenager is not something I was prepared for, Feist writes her so awfully. He doesn’t know what a woman is.
Sorry for the rant. I think I just hate Feist. No one should stop you from enjoying a piece of art (novels in this case).
Tend to agree with all of that. I much prefer L E Modesitt Jr if I want stock characters with a predictable plotline. He’s a much better wordsmith than Feist.
Oh… Well. Some strong opinions. I’ll strike Feist off the list then. …scared to ask now… What about Brandon Sanderson?
I used to read LE modesitt ages ago and own a few too.
Interesting take on magic from what I remember.
I don’t think I ever got onto Feist myself.
I was a big fan of Anne McCaffrey but was biased because of my love for dragons.
Tolkien was very hard for me to digest, The Hobbit was the hardest read I’d ever done.
Modesitt has one huuuuuge failing - all his tall dark and handsome heroes are pretty much identical. And the female characters are strong alright, but also smug and kinda offensive in how they interact with people. I do like how he puts emphasis on how magic comes at a price, and that price can be high. He got better as he got older - his recent ones are much more readable too. The Imager Portfolio is imo his best long work to date.
I used to love Anne McCaffrey too - the dragons are adorable, but she too did the same saleable story over and over. After a bit you could predict the end by the finish of the third chapter or so. If not earlier, and I got bored with that.
Tolkein I met as a reader when I was 8. The Hobbit was wunnderful at that age. LOTR came soon after and I loved it until I had to study it in year 12 high school. Which killed it for many years. I haven’t seen the films - don’t know that I want to as I’m not a film person for the most part.
For light sci-fi/fantasy, I still have a strong affection for Mercedes Lackey - simple stories, well told and believable. May include dragons/magic but not guaranteed. Perfect light reading. Along with T Kingfisher - The Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking was some of the best YA stuff I’ve read recently.
George RR Martin has been a favorite for years - once you get past his obsession with zombies and cartoon characters he tells a good yarn well. Along with Kim Stanley Robinson. The Tuf Voyaging collection is a standout for me. However, the Divine Lois and Connie Willis are my current fab fave authors. Because intelligent and self and socially aware and not in the slightest bit condescending. They make you work but it’s worth it.I haven’t really sat down to read any novels in a very long time.
I can sort of remember collection some graphic novels and odd things and a vampire series and tried to keep up with Sarah J Maas books but could t keep up with everything.
I did read George RR Martin but hit a wall when I caught up with his writing of Game of Thrones and had to wait for him to finish the last few books.
Only thing I’d probably want to chase up is The Death Gate cycle by Weis and Hickman since I’ve always wanted to read them and I quite enjoyed the Dragonlance books by them.
I think the entire reading public is cheesed off with GRRM for not finishing ASOIAF. Who knows? We might get the next instalment sometime in the next 20 years …
I didn’t keep up because it took so long.
I haven’t even seen the series show. Are you serious in that he never finished writing the books?
Noted. And off my to read list.
Lol you don’t have to do that 😬😭 feist did write a huge arcing sci-fi/fantasy series that is super unique imo. I’m just AFAB so his writing of women is super apparent to me. But he is a beloved renowned writer with original ideas!
Paul Stewart - The Edge Chronicles, illustrated by Chris Riddell is a great series. Mostly fantasy with sci-fi elements, unique beautiful story.
Bah! I have to admit I am not a fan of Feist. I do however adore the Divine Lois. Check out anything by Lois McMaster Bujold. From rollicking space opera to deep psychological insight fantasy drama. Also very dry, deadpan funny. Good entry points - Memory, Diplomatic Immunity, The Curse of Chalion, Falling Free, The Sharing Knife - for a selection from her major universes. But she does perpetrate serieses, so enter at your own risk.
The Altered Carbon books are pretty good.
Super long day with psych session (v v good debrief of the last week and coping strategies for the coming weeks, but needed downtime after). Went back to the office to eat dinner then worked till 10 to catch up on lost time and finish this week’s work. At least that’s one less thing on my plate for a while. Still need to do an extra 4 hours somewhere…
I am irrationally mad at the people in one of the heaps of units nearby who just slam car doors loudly and repeatedly no matter the time. I might just close the windows tonight and see how I go since the flat is cool enough.
Night everyone.
Huge pot of chicken broth on the go. Probably last chance before weather makes this unfeasible, and I need dumplings.
I need some of that broth. I’m feeling wiped and horrible at the moment.
Head feels like it’s been full of cotton all day.
🤤 that looks so delicious.
I made do with chicken and pasta and a cup of soup of cream of chicken.
Cup soup is often a saviour. Be well 🖤
I still can’t tell if it’s hayfever or a cold or something.
Naaw. It’d telepath you a bowl if I could.
Hard day at work today. I’m seriously considering making golden syrup pudding for dinner.
