It’s easier for people to imagine the end of capitalism than it is to imagine dragons

So I am curious, does the Chinese zodiac really work like how it says it does on the back of those paper place mats they had in the strip mall Chinese place that was probably actually owned by Koreans that I went to as a kid or is that a bastardized version?

It’s a lot more complex compared to the Western Zodiac and what you get on those placemats

I’m not calling myself an expert, but I do know that in addition to the animal signs, you also have the five elements, whether or not that cycle is possessed of yin or yang, and also that cycles heavenly and earthly stem

So yeah, the placemat is not fully informative

they’re kind of symbolic. the Chinese word 鼠 refers to both rats and mice, 羊 to both goats and sheep. they definitely understand these are different animals, but there is no consistency in how they’re represented. In the north, it’s usually depicted as a sheep, and in the south it’s usually a goat.

Similarly, the South East Asia, the Ox is a water buffalo.

In Malaysia, the Rabbit is a mousedeer, and they call the Dragon the “Large Snake” and the snake “Second snake”
