As if the ongoing civil war wasn’t enough, Myanmar has now been struck by a very powerful earthquake, resulting in 2000 deaths and thousands more injured as of the time of writing. Estimates are that the death toll could reach 10,000. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are damaged, and the hospitals are overwhelmed. The earthquake struck during Eid prayers, resulting in even higher casualties as several mosques collapsed. 20 million people already required humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, and now the situation there will be even worse. International rescue teams have rushed into the country, and aid is being raised, though with USAID experiencing the… changes that it is, the United States will be of even more limited help than usual. So far, China has sent $14 million, while USAID has supplied $2 million. In Thailand, the death toll seems considerably lower, though there has still been significant damage; a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok.
Myanmar is located very close to the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In particular, the country is divided in two by the north-south oriented Sagaing fault. This fault is typically strike-slip; that is, each side of the fault moves horizontally past each other. The earthquake’s depth was 10 kilometers, which is pretty shallow, and its proximity to the surface amplified the felt force of the earthquake. Additionally, the soft soil in this region tends to further amplify seismic waves through a process called liquefaction. Combine all this with the lackluster building codes due to many years of impoverishment and civil wars, and this explains why the death toll, and the expense to the country in general to repair damage, will probably be extremely high.

Dems are trying to incorporate palestine protests just like they did with BLM. Its literally their job to maintain capital. The history of the democratic party is littered with social movements sucked dry by libs.
I don’t think it will work. The characteristics of BLM made it easier to co-opt. If you’re a cynical Dem you can pretend that “black lives matter” while ignoring calls to defund the policy.
Palestine stands in too stark of a contrast to where the Democratic Party is to be able to co-opt. Remember, if you are a Dem politician even suggesting Palestinians have a right to live or that Israel has been “too tough” gets you on AIPAC’s shit list. So you can’t appear to be supportive on that end. On the other end, people at pro-Palestine protests almost universally despise Dems. You typical Dem will run away in tears when they hear chants about Genocide Joe or implying that the Democrat Party is at all similar to the GOP in regards to Palestine. And with what’s going on in DC today, I think they care more about trying to drown out the noise from the Palestine protests than they are trying to co-opt it.
Dems want Palestine to go away, they know they can’t do-opt it.

Contest between the two protest movements is going to become more and more common. We had an exact mirror of this happening locally, with the Indivisible-led protest demanding we be removed from today’s protest explicitly over our support for Palestine. The radical movement has to fight for legitimacy against the institutional one for leadership of the struggle.

My org got pulled from the speaker list of a TDOV event explicitly because we were going to call out Democratic inaction on trans issues. It sucks, but I always hope situations like this push people towards more narrowly targeted actions that are organized by socialists and labor instead of these coalition-based mass demonstrations.

Union leadership has been neutered for a while. This was even an issue during 20s Germany, where the union bureaucrats and union representatives allowed the proto-SS to massacre german communists and labor strikers.
The unions of the today’s west are a hundred times more subservient and reactionary than back then.
Yeah a lot of trade union discourse is rooted in conceptual 19th century europe thought. Its not an universal unproblematic good as seen with socialist poland.
