So what happens if you aren’t a subscriber and press the C button? […] “You would be able to find out about the NSO subscription there and get a sense of some of the functionality,” he said.

Oh that’s awesome. Everybody loves when they accidentally press an in-game button that hijacks what you’re doing and loads a store page. Now you have a physical button that does the same!

These buttons are almost never inactive when it makes sense. There’s an old joke about things being difficult to use when engineers making design decisions, but we’re in the much worse paradigm where marketing executives make design decisions. Unfortunately a good user experience might lose a potential sale.

I hit the Netflix button on my bluray player and it’ll stop playing the movie I’m watching to open Netflix. Ofc outside of decoding blurays the device is underpowered and the Netflix app hasn’t been updated in years so it’s a very slow loading process too.

My Shield remote has a Netflix button. It’s one of the biggest buttons and I swear one of the easiest to press as well. You can bump the remote and Netflix pops up

And the funny thing is that after some updates in my TV, i could uninstall the (Netflix, Amazon, Rakuten) apps from it. But guess what. When you push the button, it opens the apps store to the page of (Netflix, Amazon, Rakuten) app to install it. I mean how much idiots must they be?

Having to pay for basic online services for games you’ve already purchased for a current gen console is exploitative to begin with

Finding out I had to pay for a service back on the original Xbox to play online was rage inducing; on the Playstation (was) and PC playing online is free, why would I pay for something that’s supposed to be free?

Is that the button that does online shit?

If they’re charging for online shit then the button that does online shit is t gonna work unless you paid to have online shit.

I don’t think online shit should be $40 a month like psn is but having a button that does online shit require that you have the online shit subscription to work is a nothingburger.

No it’s not. It’s a baked-in way to manipulate people into paying for their stupid online. Its mere presence is vile. Easily could have been put inside the home button’s menu/UI.

I’m also imagining accidentally hitting it with my palm and getting really annoyed at it pausing my game.

other consoles have done kinda similar shit with “social” features but this is such a blatant way to trick some kid into setting up a subscription service with their dad’s credit card coz they tried closing mariokart and opened up the store page instead

Not really that surprising that an online feature requires an online membership. As far as online memberships go $1.67 per month is negligible to most people.

It should be remappable if it has no use but Nintendo are weird like that.
