I’ve heard multiple times that it’s not okay to allow any food to go down the drain even with a garbage disposal, I guess because solids shouldn’t go down the drain. But we put a shit ton of solids down the drain through the toilet and that seems to be fine. Does the toilet go to a different sewage pipe then the sink? Or does shit have different properties that make it dissolve better?

Not sure where you heard that you shouldn’t put any food down the drain with a disposal. A lot of foods are okay.

Generally, you should avoid oils, hard items (bones/nuts/egg shells), and sticky stuff like coffee grounds/rice.

Heard it a couple times but latest that prompted this was an email from the HOA of my condo:

Don’t pour grease, food scraps, or anything else down the sink. Use a sink strainer to catch debris and toss it in the compost. Clogged pipes cause backups and expensive repairs for everyone.

Also my girlfriend works in water quality and does inspections of restaurants and they are not even allowed to have garbage disposals since it gives the employees the idea that anything can go down the sink except water.
