This is what I particularly hate about self censorship

If you are behaving a certain way to please an algorithm or an advertiser, you’re just cosplaying as a bot—particularly on lemmy where all it’s going to accomplish is annoyance

Say whatever the fuck you like, it’s more human

But what if what I want to say sometimes resembles the self censorship anyway, because my anxieties make me want to avoid coming off as too “mean” regardless of what some corpo thinks?

        Are you fucking serious?

        Good.

        Are you serious?

Another great option if you don’t want to swear.

        Are you f*cking serious?

Dumb autocensorship. Don’t ever do this. Either spell it out or leave the word out altogether. This accomplishes nothing.

I swear at this point I dreamed this, but I have a distinct memory about an underground newspaper somewhere that was getting hassled by censorship interests, that published an issue with the following on the cover:

      Fuck. Shit. Cunt. Piss.

Serious ask - if anyone remembers this and can toss up a link about it, I’d appreciate it. Have looked a few times and turned up nothing, pretty sure it came up when I was in school researching random stuff related to the U.S. circa 1960s-1970s but could be wrong.

Assuming I didn’t dream this, always wanted a framed photocopy of it.

Edit: it might be buried under stuff about George Carlin’s 7 words you can never say on television, but I swear this was something else.

Okay but like real talk, i had to walk past like ten cop cars today, and had to constanrly be reminding myself that i do not carry a gun, and nobody would be on my side if i did every time i saw one those scum bullying a kid or beating a homeless guy or whatever other unsavory shit i couldn’t tell. I wanted to shout “fuck off” "go home“¹. I wanted to kill them. For so many reasons. I wanred to take these foreign invaders, these thugs ruining the place i live, and i wanted to kill them². It was disgusting. I took videos of one³. Not for the first time. I want them out. I don’t love or trust the people around me, but I’m not afraid they’re going to kill someone every time i see my neighbors. I dont have to be stone terrified. I don’t, for anyone but the cops, memorize fucking incantations that i know aren’t worth shit if nobody’s watching, if the camera can’t pick up how white my skin is, like im some dark ages fucking peasant and they’re the actual fucking devil.

How many people do you have to terrorize like that before we agree to kill you? Is there a number? I feel like there’s a number. Would any of you, if you saw someone in like real desperate life or death trouble, like they’d been shot or something, you went to help, but you saw it wasnt a person; it was a cop. how many of you would have to think for even a second before just forgetting you heard anything?

¹because cops never seem to police the communities thry live in. Im not insane for noticing that, right? Like, if youve ever seen a cop show its id to buy cigarettes or something, the addresses are never anywhere near where they work. Sometimes like ten hours drive away. Always. It’s not like a one off thing. If you see a cop in uniform: its not from here, and does not live here. That is an invader with a uniform and a gun, and you are paying it’s paycheck, wealth extracted from you. Up in smoke. Less than useless to anything you might want.

²yeah it sounds kinda faschy, because they say it constantly, and it’s a confession every fucking time, can we stop letting them get away with it someday? Fucking please? Is this a special privilege we grant only to the kkk, or can i get all banshee-pilled and get public support to just fucking murder whoever i want with impunity, if thats how we’re doin this?

³didnt even know where to send it for like an hour. The inboxes are closing so fast, not that documenting the horrors ever helped. At some point it just feels like im recording b roll for a snuff film. At what point am i complicit in the horrors? Because im not proving anything to anyone. For fucks sake, if you still dont believe police are like this and you haven’t been in a coma so long that this is the first beaytiful and unfortunately horrible momemt we have both been conscious on this earth, then you simply will not be comvinced.⁴ at what point is a witness just an audiemce, a guarantor that nothing here is acrually wrong? Is anyone dumb enough to still believe any court is ever going to hold any cop accountable for anything ever?

⁴hey, coma person. Okay so everything you loved and held dear has, if you’re very lucky, been burned to ashes and forgotten, but more probably butchered denatured and sold back to you full of poison. Trust nothing, everything you loved is gone, and any of the vicious howling corporate svavengers willing enough to defile its corpse and wear strips of its face like a mask to slip past your defenses is probably not as good a friend as the percent original skin might suggest. But. This is an iphone, and its amazing. Yeah you just… So see? The future’s not better or worse! Just different!

This is how you get places like 4chan. I’d rather have a place where everyone is nice and bigots get banned than have a “marketplace of ideas” where everyone is an asshole. Really cool that you want your freedom of saying “I want to skin you alive” but what about my freedom of not having to get that said to me?

I don’t know if they know that some people are nice because they want to, not because they have to.

        Fine by me.

To add to my original point: What OP says against corporate sanitization is true (e.g. weid Youtube monetization rules), but it’s also the exact same thing bigots say because they want to call people slurs. And I don’t want to give them what they want.

The issue is more a loss of contextual awareness. For example - why should a true crime documentary have to self-censor words like rape, died, sexual assault when they are often relevant to the story being told? Why should a blogger talking about mental health issues have to self-censor the word suicide?

These are valid issues. There’s a reply in here which has a screenshot of someone saying “elon musk can fucking die”. Context tells you immediately it’s not a targeted death threat, it’s an opinion. Yet the systems that places rely on cannot make that distinction.

4chan existed way before the advent of the attempts to sanitize the internet. Heck I remember the biker forum I frequented having some nasty shit and attitudes on there. But despite their scummy viewpoints, these were people I could rely on when my motorbike shat itself.

Smaller communities police themselves better as well. Large-scale social media and other platforms just made it much harder to have the moderator model that those forums had. The human touch is sorely lacking as much as the automated processes lack nuance and context. A modern form of the Scunthorpe problem I guess.

But I am not agruing for corporate sanitization and algorithm-based word filters. I am also with you that we are in a dire need of smaller communities with a human touch. I am merely arguing against anyone who “just” wants to normalize hyperviolent comments. Because introducing this to the current large-scale, algorithm-monitored communities will not fix the above issues, but backfire spectacularly, because it enables bigots.

OP saw all these problems, but chose the wrong solution. We need smaller, closer communities instead.

So you think slurs should be banned instead of bad behaviour?

If I can’t ask what a TERF if or discuss it, it’s stupid IMO. Weaseling in racism with ordinary words is, you know it, bad IMO.

No? Where did I say that? Bad behaviour should be banned, no matter what.

But in the current state (huge scale, algorithm based moderation only) this is not properly enforced already. My problem now is that if hyper violent language no longer gets you banned, bigots will use that and will get away with it too often. I’d rather not be able to call someone an asshole than getting called 50 slurs and then watch the algorithm do nothing about it.

Do you think hyper violent language does not fall under bad behaviour if it isn’t a transcript for example? Should hyper violent language be banned so that you can’t talk about it?

No, the nuance is that I think that in the current state of social media, as shitty as it is, a blanket unbanning of bad words would be a net negative.

I do not think that bad words should be banned generally. In quotes/transcripts etc it should be fine. I know they currently aren’t and I agree that’s a problem. Also, of course, in small, self-moderated communities bad words are fine if everyone there is ok with that.

But OP isn’t arguing for that. They just argued that we should blindly add hyper-violent language (back) to the systems we currently have. And not only regarding transcriptions/etc. And I think that will lead to a way worse outcome that the current status quo.

Again, I do not think bad words in a transcription/quoting/discussing should be banned because that’s ridiculous. But, on large social media platforms, they should stay banned when being directed at individuals, because yes, calling Elon an asshole to his face is carthatic, but you are buying that freedom with the price of bigots calling everyone slurs. And I simply don’t think that’s worth it, nothing more.

The issues we face with capitalized social media can only be solved by forming smaller circles again. Not by adding slurs into the mix and hoping they will only benefit you and won’t make the place a miserable hellhole.

I principally agree with you, it’s why I use reddit/lemmy and not 4chan.

But there is a difference, albeit hard to convey correctly through text. But I think some of the extreme responses mentioned are the ones in the banter type. It’s a kind of response when someone jokingly says “Star Wars and Star Trek is pretty much the same” and you go “I’ll skin you alive” due to the unjust comparison. It sure as hell don’t work with strangers, but it can within an community since everyone knows neither party is serious about it. Which is what the original post kind of says that it can work in the right community.

As a Zoomer this is what I hate about a lot of Millennials. They think allowing people to do anything that might make anyone a little uncomfortable leads to allowing Nazis to run rampant. I’m not even the abrasive person but… some people really DO need a thicker skin. There’s a huge difference between extreme expressions of anger, and genocide advocacy. In fact, a lot of bigotry is disturbingly polite.
