I understand what “Clankers” means… but what is a “Clankers” app? What is it they actually want?

Yeah, clanker is just referencing that it’s made of metal. Whatever. Not particularly insulting.

Toaster is referring to a device that’s cheap and not intelligent. It’s usually overlooked as it’s just a basic tool that serves the purpose it was built for. They also can be replaced with any other toaster. They don’t have any special functionality that others don’t (usually).

And they don’t even require electronics; calling a program or programmed device a toaster is akin to saying “your programming is not only bad but pointless”.

OK, maybe I’m reading too much into it but I also like toaster better.

“Toaster” is also a veiled Warhammer 40K reference - there’s a long-running meme about technology-worshipping cultists in 40K and their sexual interest in that particular piece of technology. Which makes it even better to those who know.

I didn’t know that one. Battlestar: Galactica I think is the most popular toaster slur reference.

Clanker is a slur for robots and artificial intelligence software. The term has been used in Star Wars media (…). In 2025, the term became widely used to discuss distaste for machines ranging from delivery robots to large language models.

          a slur for robots

It gave me pause too. But, wikipedia again:

A pejorative word, phrase, slur, or derogatory term is a word or grammatical form expressing a negative or disrespectful connotation, a low opinion, or a lack of respect toward someone or something.

Not sure that’s what you meant though.

It is explicitly a slur. That’s the whole joke. People use it in analogy to the n-word all the time.

once you admit it’s a slur and let the companies categorize it as such you can’t go back. It’s derogatory, sure, but not a slur imo.

I disagree so strongly that I actually won’t say the word despite digital people not even existing to be hurt by it. Not slurs against orcs or elves either. Gives me the same feeling as IRL slurs.

Ai is a tool, not a sentient being. When it provides shitty output either it was a poorly designed tool or it was misused.

So tired of people hating on it with the idea that it will go away. It isn’t going away.

Learn how to deal with it.

I have learned that swapping AI with cocaine will get you banned from Facebook in the cases where you discuss the benefits of AI.

I didn’t think it broke the rules because it was funny. But whatever they used to review it did not have the capability of understanding funny.

Wait hold on, I’m really confused if we’re doing the bit or not. Let me run it through the script:

“AI is good because not everyone can be born with blue blooded talent” is an actual defense for AI I’ve seen

Holy shit, it doesn’t matter. AI IS COCAINE!

        That explains so much
