Like, I could completely understand being like “I’m not comfortable with you using my name for something like this. Even though you say it’s not about me there are enough similarities to the character that it could easily mislead people - myself included, as you can see - into thinking otherwise.” There is a reasonable version of this, but insisting that “lol someone wrote a play about me” and using it for clout years later is peak sneerable behavior.
Also I want to sneer at Yud not understanding the concept of Off-Off-Broadway vs Off-Broadway but TBH I don’t understand the way that different tiers of theatrical prestige connect and can only assume that it’s like the circles of hell in Dante’s Inferno.
I mean I even get that you would use some embellishment for entertainment value. But if the person who made the play writes you and corrects you, you should stop doing that, esp if you are doing the whole Rationalism. But yeah, that isn’t what the rich and powerful do, they make up shit and ignore corrections all the time. The power of being stubborn.
A while back somebody from themotte (when it still was on reddit) said about sneerclub vs themotte that the sneerclub wanted to do what is right, and they wanted to figure out what is true. And I often think about that when people in the Rationalist space do not really want to figure out what is true.
FWIW my understanding is the “Off”-ness is just decreasing theatre size, but gets (mis)construed as less prestige/fame/quality etc. Fame is probably fine for construing, but prestige/quality is orthogonal. Like you could conceivably have absolute theatre mega stars do an epoch-defining production in an intimate 50-seat theatre or something, and that would still be “Off-off-broadway”.

Is it really odd, though? If someone wrote a play where the main character was named after me, was doing the same work I did, and was obsessed with the same particular field of study I was, and then the author tried to claim the play wasn’t “about” me, I’d press X to doubt too.

Yeah if you read the reviews the singularity is more a bit of a godot situation than something Yudi fears and has doubts over, which is a bit different than Yud who created the ‘we must make sure it is friendly’ institute earlier.
