A challenge coin is given out by someone (usually a fairly senior person in a uniformed service) to an individual for a specific event/incident like a recognition award.
The idea behind them is that when you get together with all your uniformed buddies for drinks (or you’re waiting at the bar) someone might produce a challenge coin. This is the ‘challenge’ part. You then have to produce your highest ranked challenge coin.
For the USA the President’s challenge coin usually outranks everyone so if for example someone produced that then the loser of that challenge buys them a drink.
Rules and rankings vary region to region, this is just my understanding.
