V2G should be an essential part of every new EV. They have the capacity to actually fix the problem they’re creating, by putting a load on the electrical grid, and you can offset the upfront costs by getting paid to do it.
It an extremely convenient feature, but I think it’s far better to have a separate house battery. It doesn’t need to be anywhere near as big capacity, can be made from cheaper cell types because weight isn’t as much of an issue, and it doesn’t drive off during the day when expensive power is more likely.
Sure but that costs tens of thousands of dollars extra…this makes use of something you already have…
Not tens of thousands. A few thousand. It’ll be about 10% of your car price.
Let’s rephrase it - v2g let’s you leverage an existing battery you already have and paid for to aid the grid locally, therefore it should be included in all vehicles.
Not for a battery the size of your car. Or even half of it.
YAGNI - You ain’t gonna need it.
Unless you’re trying to power Aircon, you don’t need anything neer the size of a car battery to get you 90% of the savings.
Why wouldn’t you be running Aircon?
…because you live somewhere that doesn’t need it.
