My mom, who is usually pretty level headed about this kind of thing, has completely memory holed this.
She very good at sewing and crafty stuff and used to make me the most badass Halloween costumes. For example: a full body Gizmo fur suit with a big head, ears, and huge eyes where I looked out the mouth. The kind of thing you’d see theme park employees wearing at a Disney park.
Every year, if there was snow on the ground I’d have to cover up these awesome costumes with a jacket, my dad’s jacket with the bulkier ones like Gizmo or E.T. (another full body one with a head). I’d worry about it the entire week before and if there was snow we’d have a huge fight about whether it was enough, “I can see the grass through it, it’s so light”, “it didn’t even stick to the pavement or sidewalks”.
But she swears she doesn’t remember any of this and it almost never snowed in October. Meanwhile now they wonder if they’re going to get their first snow that sticks before Christmas.
Sounds like lead exposure, unfortunately.
But not to worry, Millennials and Zoomers are closing the generation gap with lead from disposable vapes.
The world has hit 1.5 degrees of heating on average, but the heat is not evenly distributed. If you’re in the northern US states or Canada where you used to have to wear a jacket, the climate has already heated up 2-3 degrees. In the Arctic more like 4.
I hate to say it, but I hope the USA heats up the fastest, particularly in the states that support climate change. And I’m gonna be cycling through 91 degree weather this afternoon myself.
Kids costumes today are really cool. I saw one that actually looked like Christian bales batman (but tiny). Back in my day you got a mask held on by a rubber band and a vinyl smock with a picture of the character on it.
The smock was the worst. Even as a kid I remember being like “what is this shit??”
Yeah. Like Batman would wear a smock with his own picture on it.
that’s how you know it’s batman. he’d never do that, so the disguise works.
One time I made a Carrie costume. Sewed a dress from old sheets and drenched myself in homemade fake blood (starch+cocoa powder+food dye). Only then did I realize I’d permanently stain any coat I’d put over that. So I just went out in my thin, sleeveless dress. It was snowing.
Well, shivering from cold is probably indistinguishable from shame and uncontrollable murderous telekinetic rage, so you were good!
…which was the style at the time.
what i miss is darkness on halloween. we’d trick or treat in the dark, not in the light. godsdamned bullshit daylight saving time
Daylight Savings needs to go.
If mother made the costumes she generally made them pretty warm.
I did have to have rain jackets some years, it would be freezing rain.
After 20 years I’m still not used to NW Florida. Highs in the 80s all month, just yesterday the high was 68F.
It’s gotten a little warmer here but the two big things that are new are the summer droughts and the freak winter storms.
