Someone asked me once who I thought the least evil billionaire was and I had to stop and ask “…is it actually Gabe Newell?” but I do think people undersell Valve’s influence in online gambling.

The hardware is cool but I wanna mention that they are also making ~a translation layer~ open source compatability layer for x86 to ARM, which is crazy. I really hope they open source that, because that could be another bell tolling for the death of Windows

The cube needs to have a really good price to be worth it. It’s launching at the like the bare minimum specs for 2025 with the 8GB of VRAM and 16gb of system RAM. The GPU is equivalent to a low end one from last gen. The advertising (I think deceptively) says it runs 4k with FSR, but I don’t buy it, as that’s something that a lot of desktops struggle to do without the game becoming an unrecognizable smear. The Steam Deck was left behind within a year or two of its launch because of the specs it launched with and this seems to be similar. I think anyone considering it should really temper their expectations if they plan to actually use it with a 4k TV, which I assume most people buying it will do without knowing any better. This is perfect for someone who still plays at 1080p or only plays indies. There are other options for someone who just wants a mini PC for web browsing and stuff. You also can’t replace the CPU or GPU since they’re soldered on, so it’s pretty much impossible to upgrade in a meaningful way.

It seems like it’s targeting people that don’t have a PC or since a lot of Steam users already have a powerful PC this would be their secondary PC for the living room or for their partners / families. Since Xbox is trying to charge $30 a month now any way to escape a monthly subscription will be getting more appealing

Xbox is dying and it looks like this is basically perfect for getting those people into Steam instead (especially considering how good this will look compared to the $1500 Xbox 6)

The steam deck’s power for me has been less of an issue because low latency streaming from a main PC has gotten incredibly good (and when there’s really well optimized games like BG3). They added HDR to remote play recently and it looks amazing, especially at 90fps.

Strategy wise it feels like Valve is setting a floor for 3rd parties that will release more powerful Steam Machines (like Steam Deck to Lenovo Legion 2) and potentially trying to cap developer excesses like Borderlands 4 expecting people to have 5080s at the minimum 🤢

      • I always thought one of the main selling points of the borderlands series was because of its art style it could look good and run well on lower end hardware. I played a bunch with people who didn’t normally play pc games or even just had a laptop cos it was a great first looter shooter anyone could play.

    • This seems intended to compete with the console market, which also aim for “4K”. That’s the standard I expect valve to be comparing to.

I don’t see enough info here to accurately predict performance on the gpu side but a very vague approximation would put it inbetween the ps5 and ps5 pro or the horrendously titled AMD ryzen AI MAX strix halo 385.

I think there’s a market here for people who want a new pc but not to engage with the current pc parts hellscape, or want to move to Linux with a hassle free experience.

Seems like it’ll still be an improvement for abused Nintendo customers, which I think might just be the bar they’re aiming to pass: casual customers that don’t want to mess with anything too technical.

I still play at 1080p and mostly indies and lighter games, so it’d probably be perfect for me. Apparently the GPU is similar to a 4060 which I do have on my main PC and runs games that are just a little too demanding for Steam Deck. Dunno, maybe building a new PC is still a better option.

This is hard to believe, a PC gaming console that runs games at 4k/60FPS and is a 160mm cube that makes zero noise and stays cool? What kind of eldritch sorcery is this? What sort of unholy daemon lingers within the Gabecube?

This is giving me big Kickstarter scam vibes, but it’s fucking Valve so surely they have to deliver something at least, right? If they can actually make this thing work and be reasonably affordable then this will be huge for PC gaming, I think.

Extremely self-congratulatory tech insider, but puts the specs in context. It’s about as powerful as a $600 laptop, which is the most he expects it to sell for.

Valve only claims “6 times the performance of a Steam Deck” in the announcement, which isn’t all that much depending on how that’s measured. Still way faster than an Xbox, though.

If you remember, they marketed the Steam Deck as being able to run AAA games, which it definitely couldn’t do without massive compromises. There’s a definitely a level of marketing BS here, but I wonder if there’s going to be a point in the near future where they can say ”if you don’t care about AAA, this is for you”.

It will basically be a PS5/Xbox without a monthly subscription and have a handheld and VR headset ecosystem ready to go. It’s not super powerful but I think at the PS5 level most people will think everything looks good enough already

The only shame is not getting FSR4 but maybe they’ll be able to accommodate the RDNA3 int8 port of it

Genuinely pretty cool stuff, and I don’t like to compliment Valve very often. I knew another Steam controller would look like this, it was a no-brainer with the Steam Deck. I really enjoyed the first one, as someone with very bad nerve issues with my hands it was (still is?) the most ergonomic non-split controller, so I hope they’ve kept that sensibility with this one since the Deck itself is kind of a nightmare on my hands for long-term use. I guess we’ll see. I hope you can use the split VR controllers with non-VR games. Their promotional video made it sound like you could, but I’ve never used the Valve Index so maybe that’s always been supported. I think it’s really funny they’ve brought back ‘Steam Machines’, that thing they tried back in 2012 or whatever and it totally flopped, but it’s not going to flop now because computer software sucks so much and Linux is eating everyone’s lunch.

the steam machines were shitty collaborations with third party sellers to ship small pre built PCs with an undercooked steam OS without any compatibility layer which meant devs had to port their games to linux and no one did so it flopped. the GabeCube is gonna be first party finely tuned hardware running 2025 SteamOS which basically runs any game under the sun (besides the anti cheat issue).

the flopping depends entirely on the price, especially since USians are suffering right now and probably don’t have money to spend on stuff like this. it could be a great product but chip prices and trade wars could easily kill it.

I got grip/extenders for my SteamDeck, and it really helped out my hands. I still can’t play all day on it, but I’ve noticed a definite improvement.

There are rumours a new game is coming (but to be fair those rumours existed forever) the hardware release gives them more weight though. I heard there might be an announcment next week.

The turn towards marketing VR headsets as essentially a big screen steam deck was definitely something I saw coming. When the Index was first launched the VR market was very nascent, but nowadays the Quest has dictated the standard. High-End VR will always have a niche among the sim and enthusiast community, but right now the majority of VR is happening on a Quest, they are being sold at a loss to ensure that. Those dreams of AAA VR games are gone and now if it cant run on a standalone Quest 2 you may as well not bother to make it. Valve is pretty much the only ones who can challenge the Quest in any way with their steam compatability. You can see this in how it is being advertised, the VR games are an afterthought, this is essentially a slightly better Quest 3 with dedicated steam compatibility.

Interesting to see how it plays out, alot of which depends on the pricing. But as a VR user with no interest in flat screen gaming with it I will probably stick to the Index, the built in headphones (which are fantastic, any VR headset could be instantly improved by adding Index’s sound system to it), top strap and controllers (The new ones aren’t even rechargeable!) are not worth losing for a very slight upgrade in resolution and wireless.

EDIT: After watching the entire PC Gamer review, The main focus seems to be on streaming with minimal lag from a PC, and the speaker system does seem a little more sophisticated with a set of back speakers too.

oh my… just when i no longer have a job too. That vr headset might be the ticket for me. I have the Index but I don’t have any space to really use it and it’s really cumbersome to set up and tear down. I refuse to get an Oculus because I don’t ever want a facebook account.

I still have the OG steam controller and it’s still the best controller for me, although I understand why people hated it. If the price for new one is reasonable I’ll definitely try it.
