The Occupation of Alcatraz was a 19-month long protest which began on this day in 1969, when 89 Native Americans and their supporters occupied and reclaimed Alcatraz Island as indigenous land.

The protest was led by Richard Oakes and Grace Thorpe. The group chose the name Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) for themselves and lived on the island together until the protest was forcibly ended by the U.S. government.

IOAT claimed that, under the Treaty of Fort Laramie between the U.S. and the Lakota tribe, all retired, abandoned, or out-of-use federal land was returned to the Indians who once occupied it.

By late May of 1971, the government had cut off all electrical power and all telephone service to the island. Left without power, fresh water, and in the face of diminishing public support and sympathy, the number of occupiers began to dwindle. On June 11th, 1971, a large force of federal officers removed the remaining 15 people from the island.

I am so sick of seeing people just say any old bullshit about China. It is so fucking annoying that moronic us citizens who have never left heir shitty little corner of the world. Don’t know shit about shit besides which funko pop misprint boxes are worth double. Somehow still thinks they are an expert on China because they can parrot some nonsense their worst uncle made up from facts he also didn’t know. Slavering at the mouth to call it west taiwan, genuinely believing they aren’t being played. It is so transparent and sad.

i had a similar interaction the other day in a random focus group about climate change and i had to hear live from university students old tropes like “But at what cost to their population?” when China came up as doing well on climate change lmao. hanging out in predominantly communist bubbles made me blissfully unaware how blatantly uninformed and id like to say idiotic the general population seemingly is. tho as sad as it is whenever the bubble gets pierced at times like these im also reminded that we still have a lot of work to do

my ass was playing mental bingo with all the anti-socialism arguments, some guy deadass responded that we don’t need to end capitalism we just need to reduce consumption, whatever that means lmao
