I’m looking for a moving van that is not U-Haul where I can drive across a few provinces.
Rona offers moving vans and trucks but not for this distance.
Enterprise Trucks as well but not for this distance.
Budget Rental offers this distance if you can find a location with vans. But you have to bring the van back since the van is assigned to a city. Its about $100-$125 per day depending on the team of the year. Every day rented includes 100km included, anything over is $0.14/km.
I’d be looking to drop off the vehicle at the location, unless there is a huge savings to bring it back.
When I last moved across country (2 years ago) it was literally like $10k for a one way rental with a decent sized truck or trailer.
I ended up just buying a brand new 7*14 enclosed trailer for less and one could resell it for basically what i paid if I wanted the money back instead of the trailer but for my needs i’m keeping it 🤷♂️ cargo trailers dont depreciate much.
Have you looked into Penske? I’m pretty sure they operate in Canada.
As far as I know, in Montréal there’s Location Légaré that rents trucks of all kinds for moving. But you have to bring it back. They don’t have the same widespread service that U-Haul has.
Otherwise, I’d recommend using a moving company.
Since this is the BuyCanadian community, I’ll put down a couple Canadian options since they are kind of hard to find online. Problem is you’d need to bring the truck back since they only have branches in the local area.

Look in to container companies. They can drop off a cargo container with a truck, you load it yourself, and it rides a train to wherever the closest terminal is while you drive yourself and the daily essentials in your own vehicle. (Or fly or whatever) There, another driver will deliver it to your new place.
It might be pricey, but renting a truck for that kind of a drive you’re looking at $250+ a day with gas and their mileage charges on top of the rental fee. I used to drive from Edmonton to Toronto regularly, which took 3.5 days at around 1000km/day. It’s not close.
I’ve never heard of container companies. Is there a link of some sort?
I’m just going off the top of my head. I spent 20 years in the transportation industry.

Not knowing where you’re from it would be hard to pick a specific one, but I believe Big Steel Box is one of the bigger ones.
Or try CN or CP, they’ve got the rail lines and the containers. Not sure if they’d do residential pickup and delivery though.
Has anyone ever noticed that all U-Haul vehicles have US plates? Doesn’t look like they are supporting Canada. Why should we support them? Buy Canadian.

It’s something to do with Arizona having lax as fuck safety rules for vehicles, one of the reasons I would do my absolute best to avoid them before the boycott, but it makes the boycott even easier
I worked for U-Haul for years in the late 90s and early 00s. At one point the fleet’s registrations were divided across every state in which they operated (unsure about Canada). But each state had different requirements for registrations, and sometimes a truck would be gone by the time the new registration arrived at a location. So that registration had to be sent back to headquarters in Arizona, and they had to anticipate where the truck would be so they could send the registration. It was not uncommon to have trucks 6+ months out of registration.
In 98, I think it was, U-Haul made a deal with Arizona, which has permanent plates, paperwork, and no registration sticker. Their entire fleet would be registered in Arizona, and U-Haul would pay a fee to every other state in lieu of registration there. This alleviates the need to get plates/stickers to a location to meet a truck.

No they are not. Lowe’s sold Rona back for pennies on the dollar when they pulled out of Canada.
