So many things wrong with this. Firstly why do people despise benefits claimants so much? You just know that the time will come when a claimant desperately needs to buy something but the card doesn’t work for that purchase. Also this will probably cost a lot more in administration fees. And what kind of life is this for, for example, people who are permanently disabled and will never be able to work? Are we never to be allowed anything other than the basics of food and shelter? Nothing to make life worthwhile? Are we just supposed to stare at a blank wall all day for the rest of our lives? It’s amazing that people get this riled up about benefits claimants, but don’t care about billionaires squeezing everyone dry. Amazon pays so low that the UK government has to pay amazon employees benefits, the taxpayer is literally subsidising Jeff bezos, but that’s fine!
It all comes back to “He who does not work, neither shall he eat”. A line that is often taken very literally, and is very much held by a lot of people.
That’s the thing, it’s he who does not work, not he who cannot work. But people just refuse to believe that disabilities are real.
And I still take issue with “does not” vs “cannot”, given how easy it has been for fascists to extrapolate the hatred of the “workshy” to the disabled.
UK is so weirdly fascistic, didn’t they have a show showing that people on benefits can afford gasp a TV
Edit: there’s actually multiple reality TV shows lying about benefits, reality TV as always as fascistic as ever
They’ve had various programmes demonising benefit claimants, of course only ever showing the very worst ones.
people with disabilities really can’t catch a break
As if our lives aren’t shitty enough already, society tries everything to make them worse. Why don’t they just herd us into gas chambers and be done with it?

Only half joking when I ask if you’ve seen the price of gas, lately.

Surprised that so many are concentrated in the Westcountry.
Very strong petit bourgeois element in the Southwest of England
Probably a higher proportion of retirees?
So in other words, people who on’t have to worry about the consequences of this. makes sense!
