As we rapidly approach the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Ukraine War (an anniversary I absolutely did not expect would occur while the two sides were still in combat), we have seen Russia turn to a new strategy, starting late last year but intensifying in December and now January.
Russia seems intent to disconnect Ukrainian cities from the electrical grid by focussing bombing on thermal, gas, and hydro stations, causing major power blackouts across the country. Russia is also bombing substations relatively close to Ukraine’s three nuclear power plants (Zaporzhye, the fourth, remains under Russia control), studiously avoiding hitting the premises of the NPPs themselves for obvious reasons. Even if they’re far away from the NPPs, striking the substations does have risks, because if the nuclear reactors aren’t shut off before the substations are bombed, there is a possibility that there will be insufficient backup power to prevent a meltdown - hence why Russia hasn’t really attempted to do this for four years.
Most of the electricity generated in Ukraine comes from the nuclear power plants, both because of the infrastructure they had initially (Ukraine was 7th in the world in nuclear electricity generation before the war) and because Russia has bombed most non-nuclear power stations and substations already. Over the last couple weeks, we have seen Ukrainian media fly into a frenzy about long-lasting blackouts, especially in the middle of winter. After the Zionist entity destroyed virtually all civilian infrastructure in Gaza while the West cheered on, they now appear to have changed their mind on whether such strikes are an effective and humanitarian option to subject millions of people to.
Regardless of whether you personally believe these Russian strikes are justified (I’m pretty iffy myself), it must be stressed that Ukraine has been bombing Russian tankers and oil refineries and power stations for a long time now, so in a sense, this is a retaliation. It’s also remarkable, compared to Western wars, that Ukraine was even still allowed to possess a functioning electrical grid for nearly four years into a war of this magnitude. That all being said, while Ukrainian strikes have been somewhat but not overly impactful on the Russian oil sector, the response is clearly very asymmetrical: Ukraine’s power grid is, according to Ukrainian energy corporations, now 70% degraded and is virtually impossible to now repair, and blackouts can last most of the day.
For everybody’s sake, I hope a ceasefire and peace deal will be reached soon. But after four years of seeing opportunities for an end to this war squandered over and over, I’m not holding my breath.

The Kuomintang are the right wing opposition party in Taiwan right now? Sorry, I am clueless about them.
There are three parties in the ROC: the DPP, the KMT, and the TPP. The DPP are the separatist party and currently in power, the KMT are pro-status quo and the TPP are mostly agnostic between separatism vs status quo. On paper, the TPP should be ideologically closer to the DPP, but since the DPP has been trying to jail the chairman of the TPP on trumped up charges, the KMT and the TPP are in coalition.
The KMT has its origins in the Chinese Civil War although it has gone through multiple iterations to the point where the modern KMT has nothing in common with Sun Yat-sen’s KMT or Chiang Kai-shek’s KMT for that matter. The DPP only officially existed after the end of martial law and liberalization during the 90s. The TPP is the new kid on the block having only been founded in 2019.
They are currently the opposition with a plurality in the legislature. They are the party of the Chinese nationalists that the CPC eventually kicked off the mainland, who turned Taiwan into a right-wing dictatorship for decades. They are the largest voice in politics on the island still deeply serious about reunification with the mainland, despite being right-wing. Obviously they want to be the party in charge, but they are the most likely party to agree to any form of reunion
They started out with a huge leftist segment in China. They were supported by the USSR for a while. I think they still practice democratic centralism. The Left KMT is still active on the mainland
Sun Yatsen, their founder, is a national hero in Taiwan as well as the mainland. He was dope from what I know of him
I just can not see that happening at the moment. How can the Kuomintang still believe they will control mainland China without a major War if they are anti CPC?
I think you’re making them out to be less pragmatic than they are. AFAIK they’d be somewhat okay with a “one country, two systems” solution like what Hong Kong has, but they want to secure the best possible outcome for Taiwan and themselves. They don’t really insist on controlling all of China, Mongolia, and bits of several other countries because they’re sane people who live on planet earth and know that’s never gonna happen.
Also the comment you’re replying to refers to the KMT wanting to be the party in charge of Taiwan, not China as a whole.
Speculation: If mainland China goes through some crisis that leads the the collapse of the CPC the KMT would probably try to swoop in. It’s like how west german parties exploited the collapse of east germany, or how monarchists think they can waltz into iran
Yes, they are the main opposition party. They advocate for closer ties with the mainland, and seem to be growing in popularity. Their new chairperson, Cheng Li-wun, opposes Taiwan independence.
