This has to be unconstitutional. What it really is - the start of imprisoning the poors so they can’t escape the collapse. They will expand this if it passes.
I’m probably stereotyping, but this seems like it’ll predominantly impact chuds. Like the specific group of peope that have large amounts of backed child support and have a passport is mainly chud small business owners.
Nah, it’ll mostly impact the poor. I think most people behind on child support are behind because they can’t afford to keep up with child support. It’s really hard to get it adjusted after it’s set and if you have a change in financial situation then you might just be fucked.
Also most poor people, who are behind, cannot afford to travel to places that need a passport
Except if you live in a border city like El Paso or San Diego. Tons of poor people in those cities who might go over the border for things like dental care or pharmaceuticals
Don’t need a passport to go to Mexico
If you’re coming from the US you definitely do. There’s also lots of ways that someone poor might afford to travel abroad, either by necessity, for work, or by someone else paying for it.
Any policy that disproportionately negatively impacts the poor is a bad one, full stop
Is this voter suppression or what’s the plan here?
My guess- non American-born citizens and people who live in “blue” cities are more likely to have passports and are more likely to use them as their main form of identification?
Definitely could be the case. I know a lot of people who have put off getting a “REAL ID” because they have a passport which works all the same.
I’m not sure if you can use the temp from the DMV at the polls before the actual card comes in the mail, however getting the “REAL ID” in the first place costs extra money which many can’t spare right now plus it requires documentation that not everyone has accessible and is a bitch to replace.
This seems like the rare competent fascist move. Bulk passport revocation from people behind on child support allows them to, with little backlash, prepare for any snags that other bulk passport revocation projects will encounter. I’ve been worried about them using exit controls to counter brain drain for a while now.
It a misguided inducement. Some states also revoke drivers licenses for non paying deadbeat parents.
I can kind of see passport as a “no travel until you pay” but “no driving until you pay” kinda just guarantees the parent will continue to be unemployed/unemployable and never pay.
