I feel like I didn’t get the memo or something. But I live in a suburb between a city and rural areas, mix of a lot of different life styles. It’s a lot like the neighborhood I grew up in, but for some reason here the gen x white people all hang out in there driveways. They’ll set a fire pit out sometimes and they all have back yards. Anyone else experience this? Am I the weird one? It makes walking the dog feel really weird sometimes.
A defining feature of Gen X is their affinity for drinking from garden hoses. The driveway gives them easy access to their childhood neglect nectar.
Mmmmmm, lead pipe water
adding another thing to the list of shit hexbear is weird about
Keep Hexbear Weird
It is in no danger. Trust.
if your neighborhood has a ton of walkers/people their age I 100% get it because I grew up in a neighborhood where every house had a big backyard but a ton of people would just chill on their porches/in their driveways exactly like how you’re describing (i’m imagining a suv/van parked in the driveway, a small front-yard and a few outdoor chairs around a brick firepit & a huge fenced in backyard you can barely see into haha), mainly because that meant they got to say hello to their neighbors who’d walk around after dinner or walk their dogs.
anyways i couldn’t get this out of my head when i initially read this and wanted so badly to post it with “god forbid another american goes outside huh” lol, please don’t take it the wrong way

It’s me fr!! Lol
No, I know I’m being a bit of a curmudgeon, but nobody sits on their lawn. Except the one fundy family who look like Mormon missionaries. They say hello, then just stare intently, they are also never talking among themselves.
I am sitting in a chair in my front yard having a drink as I write this reply
Yard tho, not driveway. There is a major distinction
It’s all yard
Naw. Siting on a chair over grass is a whole different scene to sitting on a chair over concrete.
Maybe they can’t sit on the grass because it could cause patches to die and lower the dreaded property values?
This is not really a thing in my city. The only time I’ve seen people doing it was a couple of old men who shouted “look it’s that famous movie star” at me as I passed like some kind of anti-

Okay, ive gotten that before. Theyre juzt saying you’re looking damn good in old man.
Are you that famous movie star?
That actually sounds really nice in many ways. People are outside and closer to public rather than walled away behind their fences? That this is white people sounds kinda like the opposite of what I usually see in the city near me where it’s black and brown people spending their time out in their driveway or on their porch being social while crackers are off hiding away from the world somewhere.
If you want them to stop, print out some flyers about something you care about and go hand them out. I wouldn’t want them to stop but doing community outreach is a good thing anyway imo.
I appreciate the communal aspects of it, but the driveway is what leaves me scratching my head. Especially with some of the expansive manicured lawns or occasional nice porches some people have, or maybe just under a tree. Nope, gotta sit there on the hot concrete.
Huh, that is weird but people are weird
lol I’ve noticed that in my city. I don’t know why but once it started I noticed more people doing it. Maybe it’s a modern version of hanging out on the front porch but the post 60’s houses don’t have the big raised area with a bench or swing anymore. Kinda funny when the garage is packed full of crap so they have to go out the front door or come around from the back.
i think it’s a lot this. porches nowadays are like some Backroom’s memory fragment. plus, the bit/critique in the suburban south in the 2000s was that “white people cookout in the back yard, black people cookout in the front yard.” sort of as a way to dig at how white people are all atomized behind their fences and create this “ghost village” effect in their neighborhoods by leaving the lot space in front of the house space unused for social gathering.
when i lived in a detached house in a small city in the late 2000s, i made it a point to do my drinking on the front porch so it would feel more sociable. neighbors would wave or sometimes stop by to jaw about whatever. i was lucky enough to be in an older style home on a tiny lot where the front porch was adjacent to the sidewalk. like the phrase goes, “the front stoop is the poor man’s lounge.” drinks are cheap, catch a cool breeze on a hot day (i didn’t have A/C there), gab with random people, etc.
Sounds lovely tbh
it was p cool. i had some cool people on my street. it was near campus, so some students, a few eccentrics like me. i was finishing school and letting a friend couch surf, and my cat at the time was very gregarious and would lure people up to the porch. i was buying 2 buck chuck by the case, so could always offer people a glass of the “house red” and was half in the bag by 2pm.
there was a period of time where it was kind of a spot. or it felt that way in my boozy haze.
hanging out on the front porch/yard/driveway is about as close as you can get to community in the suburbs, it’s not much but it’s something
My issue is the driveway, and not the lawn or the rare porch.

Monitoring wiejski
their pathfinding is glitching out so they can’t leave the road
Hanging out front is good, say hi to your neighbors! Driveway is an odd choice but maybe their yard, porch sucks.
I live in a porch area myself.
It’s so they can be outside, but not have to touch that icky grass
Front lawn is their pride and joy. They’re out there guarding it from dogwalkers and deliquent youths.
I hate lawns
