The Mars bar was first manufactured in Slough, England, in 1932 by Forrest Mars Sr., son of American candy maker Frank C. Mars. He modelled the Mars bar after his father’s Milky Way bar, which was already popular in the US, adjusting the recipe to better suit European tastes. He had a staff of twelve people, and originally advertised it as using Cadbury’s chocolate couverture. As a result, the “British” Mars bar (also labelled the “European”, “Global” or “Original” Mars bar) is considered to be a version of the American Milky Way bar, with only a slightly sweeter taste.

We just need to add this to those travel expression helpers, so when Brits say boot Americans think trunk, and when they say Mars Bar, we think Milky Way.
I have no idea what we’re supposed to think when they say things like “Give 'im a tickle on the blower” or “'He’s a shamwackle rounder”, only one of which I just made up.

A good one. Once, I mentioned fanny packs to some British friends in a restaurant. I already knew how it translated, and was going for effect. The not altogether successful attempts to politely avoid reacting were… amusing.

Isn’t a Mars bar just a cross between a Milky Way and a 3 Musketeers? It’s got both nougat and caramel. I’ve mixed the other two in a bite before, and I think it’s pretty spot on!
