Most escalators I’ve seen have the opposite directions parallel to each other. I assume he came up with the joke that’s what he was thinking, but when it came to actually drawing it that didn’t track very well, so he changed the layout without thinking about how that changes the joke

I chalk ones like this up to him trying his best. Though i totally agree with you, it’s hard to visualize the action because of the way it’s drawn

You’re assuming that the devil did the evil act, just because he has this shit-eating grin? Wow, shocking, I thought you were above this kind of stereotypes.

Definitely over thinking this:

Devil does not want angel to see it coming so stands normal with the pie held low so its not visible.

Only during the passing does devil quickly turn their hips to hit the pie. Then naturally turns hips back into the normal position.

The pie is slightly sticky so it does keep hanging.

What bothers me is where do they come from? They don’t start at the same level. Ive heard of a chance to still get to heaven after hell/purgatory, besides one famous case i have not heard of angels being send to hell.

Also i don’t think religion says anything about souls becoming an angel or demon, they co-exist and as far as i know don’t leave their domain.
