Isame…you suggested a couple days ago that I try writing for myself in a way that I enjoy and I’ve been doing that. My more professional stuff takes the simpler style I mentioned but everything else I get to write it how I prefer to write and it’s been great

I’ve been following the comic and as long as nobody calls the trans femme a “femboy” I can let it pass, like she literally has a deadname that nobody she cares about uses. Otherwise, it has wholesome meet cute vibes.
If it ends with her looking straight into the 4th wall and saying “men can be feminine too” I will curse shen with those curse giving witches from etsy.
It’ll be interesting to see where it goes, for sure. Could be anything! I see a lot of people jumping the gun and calling for Shen’s death which is normal tumblr ig.

Having gone and read the entire series to this point, (#11) I now hate Shen primarily for not providing a reasonable format to read the fucking comic in. You have to scroll tumblr, instagram or bluesky which made me rage.
On review though I think it’s kind of stupid. Not ill-intentioned but I’m kind of getting the feeling that the author thinks they’re smart for having slyly reversed the roles, or whatever. Maybe I’m not giving our boy Shen enough credit, but if I saw this in a manga I’d be at least a little suspicious. I feel like deeply humanising the terf-coded woman with bioessentialist characteristics isn’t the play, but that’s the story being written. Alternatively, is the Val arc going to become a “man-hating buzzkill learns to soften up and like men :3 here this one is in a dress :3” type joint?
I stand by what I said but I also don’t really think the series is good. I guess to some extent I don’t blame people for getting bad vibes off the “shockingly tolerable for a moid” comic.
Is “femboy” in the slur filter yet? Will it be? At the very least I haven’t seen the comic use it which is more than I expected tbh.

I read the first few and didn’t think it particularly great, I’m not a fan of the art either so I haven’t read the rest and probably won’t.

I watched the uprising movie with Garfield in it. I know it’s based off of the 1381 great peasants revolt and supposedly, according to the actor Garfield himself, supposed go scare the billionaires shitless.
First off, I learn once again I do not like Paul Greengrass’ shaking camera style.
Second, I do note it’s a thoroughly lib film. Thankfully the director tries to keep it historical so things that come off as rather maga hoggish have to be understood in historical context though I do wonder why would peasants be concerned with secure borders. At one point during the March on London, the thought occurs to me that you could easily draw parallels to the Maga hogs March on DC. If it wasn’t for my familiarity with the Russian history of peasants with a crank priest marching on capitals to petition their sovereign I would’ve thought this was too on the nose an homage to the hogs. I went into this unfamiliar with the actual history of the peasants revolt but it did strike me immediately that “it would be super funny if history actually rhymed and this was going to be the precursor to the bloody Sunday the Russian peasants experienced.” While they were being lead to an open field outside London to meet with their king. Of course the director agreed with me, and so does history and arrogant kings, because that’s exactly what happened. Peasants blinded by the supposed divine glory of the sovereign, believing he’s being kept captive by the evil aristocracy who torments his subjects with blood and taxes, being slaughtered like lambs by wolves at the order of the king because the dirt scrubbing peasants were being uppity asking to be freed from serfdom.
All in all, a rather lame movie, throes out a “We the commons are free in these woods, there are no kings to rule us” yadda yadda, the protagonist Garfield has the king that slaughtered his entire village at his mercy of his sickle and he let’s him go because “there will always be another king” bleh.
This is why I prefer Soviet filmography.

I’m convinced the creators just actually hate Avatar TLA and want nothing more to do but write genre tropes while being arrogant about it. Besides the Voltran-ass art direction and uninspired mad max set pieces, I don’t even know what the series is about.
The Avatar The Last Airbender trailer from 2004 fuckin stunts on this paramount+ slop any day of the year. I instantly know the setting, the characters, the overarching conflict and the heros journey. Meanwhile I’m scratching my head on what an “Avatar” is or what a “Seven Havens” is from this straight-to-reddit DVD.
Authors consumed by fandom and starting writing for fandom are doomed to always create simulacras.
