RyanF9 uses science to explain how Gore-Tex works and why you’re being ripped off.

Oh this dude makes good motorcycle videos.

Another unfun fact (dunno if it’s mentioned in the video) is that Teflon is a PFAS that is currently in our environment and ground water in harmful amounts, is definitely giving us cancer, and can’t be easily extracted or broken down :(

I hope we can go back to waxed coats and boots or something, soon.

edit:// the video does mention it. Cool video

Fjällräven still uses waxed stuff. Actually not even that expensive though somehow I think if I took my half as expensive Blåkläder pants and applied wax they’d be just as good, ultimately it’s a moderately heavy-weight polyester/cotton fabric, nothing too special.

This dude makes good videos. I’m going not a motorcycle guy but I watch his content for stuff like this video. I was also impressed by the PFAS angle this one took.

    This post is an ad.

Also not really related to technology.

An ad for what. Certainly not Gore-Tex. Have you any idea how marketing works.

Yes the video contains a sponsored segment, like 99.9% of youtube videos. Or newspaper articles. Or any other kind of content on the internet.

…what I seriously wonder though is if people are downvoting this because it deals with technology that doesn’t contain electrons.

The way you’ve decided to post this has made it an ad, the first think you see is “Check out brandname and get thing”. Putting a videos sponsor as the post content is generally not recommended.

I’ve decided nothing that’s lemmy taking the beginning of youtube’s description and putting it there. FortNine (the youtube channel) put that there, because it’s their sponsor for the video. But fine I’ll manually add the stuff after to the post.

You are seeing Lemmy’s auto generated description, which is pulled directly from YouTube.

Not the text content of OP’s post.

It’s more about patents and trademarks than technology, would be a good submission for a business community.

It’s a hell a lot more about technology as in PTFE vs. other membranes and actual experiments than random Musk posts. Or, currently at +362 on the sub frontpage, the white house threatening drug patents… not that drugs aren’t technology but I don’t see any pharmacology or chemistry in that article.

Now that you’ve taken down the “is an ad” claim, how is this not about technology? It deals with membranes which let air pass but not water (though Gore-Tex isn’t particularly good at it).

Not an ad, but pretty questionable for a YouTuber to put a plug for their sponsor as the frontmost text, when many of us use sponsorblock to actively avoid seeing such content.

At least it’s a good warning not to click that link.

Extremely common 🤷‍♂️… also, whether we use sponsorblock or not is completely irrelevant to the contents of a video description IMO.

Probably better for you to avoid youtube creators who rely on sponsors’ income to completely avoid any form of advertising. Even the sponsorblock timestamps don’t block off-hand sponsor mentions within a video

Who reads youtube description texts? On youtube, that is, it’s lemmy which puts the thing in such a prominent place. The sponsor segment is towards the end and has a count-down bar so it’s easy to skip, and Ryan specifically says to not buy that stuff if you don’t need it.

They have plenty of videos without sponsors, they’re not relying on YouTube to stay afloat in the first place they’re a motorcycle gear and parts store. You decide how trustworthy it is when you rip into Gore-Tex (primarily its price vs. performance nowadays) while selling, among plenty of alternatives, things with a Gore-Tex label. In essence what he’s saying is “Go ahead, buy the jacket that’s half as expensive”.

Interesting to find a RyanF9 video here and not in a motorcycle community. But yeah, probably most people here don’t have much interest in Gore-Tex unless they ride or do other outdoorsy things.

I think I stumbled across F9 for some random tech video and then stayed for the cinematography and hijinks.

Honestly hadn’t considered the neckbeard angle.

Really impressive that F9 is taking on Gore like this. They’re a famously vindictive and litigious company.

I haven’t checked, but I’m guessing EVERYTHING he says about Gore Tex is an easily provable fact.

If it wasn’t, Gore would sue fortnine.ca off the surface of the earth

I’ve said this for years and everyone tells me I’m using it wrong, or buying knock-off brands.

No, it doesn’t work as advertised.

Yea, it’s good for sweat levels of moisture, but boots? Forget it.

I think this vid didn’t ask or explain enough. Like:
Is PFOS / Gore Tex a health hazard if I wear it instead of eat it?
What are the non gore tex alternatives and how do they stack up to gore tex and each other?
Are any of the gore tex alternatives better or safer than gore tex?
Should I really just use a sweater and/or a plastic bag?
This was not the deep analysis I think this topic needs. Seemed mostly like a whack job on gore tex. Which may be deserved but I dont think I have enough info to m make good decisions after this vid.
