TRUMP SAYS SHOOTER IN CUSTODY, “HIGH DEGREE OF CERTAINTY IT’S HIM” LINK
- Shooter arrived on campus on Wednesday 11:52 AM local time. He climbed the staircase to the roof and opened fire at 12:20 PM.
- Suspect is male, college aged, with black hair. Was wearing Converse shoes, a cap, and a shirt with an American flag and an eagle on it.
- Current suspect is 28 or 29 years old.
- A church minister who works with law enforcement got the suspect’s father to get said suspect to turn himself in.
- Gun used is a Mauser .30-06 bolt action rifle.
- Shooter was “probably a hunter” (quoting the FBI)
- If he is caught, it is likely that he will get the death penalty. (also quoting the FBI)
- Initial “person of interest” turned out to be a dead lead.
Utah officials have “no idea” if suspect is still in the state.

Is it not just possible to create semi-realistic masks at this point or even learn how to apply makeup and effects to obscure the face?
that’s what i’ve been thinking. there’s definitely ways to use makeup to create false facial markers (moles, scars, coverup) and/or get a wig. it might be a bit uncomfortable but it could definitely lead law enforcement astray when looking for the culprit. not sure about the logistics of that kind of thing, but it can definitely be done.

to be fair, a lot could’ve happened in between the guy jumping off the roof and the security footage pictures we were given. again, no timestamps anywhere. no way to know where the security footage was filmed and what happened between the kill and the pics. the backpack could’ve been stashed somewhere for his getaway to get later, or the rifle somehow barely fit in the bag. not much can be picked out from a few pixels of a silhouette.

apparently the rifle was dropped off at some point, and there’s no timestamps on the security footage that captured the guy in full view. maybe he had a separate bag for the gun and dropped it off in it?
He went up to the roof, dropped off the rifle, went back down to the ground floor, and then went back up to the roof a new way which catches him on camera but without the rifle? Seems like convoluted cop narrative building to me
as i understand it, the narrative is this: the kid climbed up to the roof using the stairs (the pictures of him provided may or may not have been taken there), camped for 20 minutes, shot his shot, jumped down from the roof WITHOUT using the stairs, dropped the rifle into some trees and ran off. the gun he used could be disassembled/reassembled within a minute which is why it wasn’t seen in the security footage screencaps (IF they were taken at the stairs he used to reach the roof). beyond that is pure speculation.
The cops’ story about the shooter seems OK, limping/strange gait on snitch’s doorbell cameras supposedly because the gun or part of the gun is concealed (presumably in their waistband in some manner).
Stills from the stairwell could be mid-limping gait but they seem to be bending their right leg in one of the photos, which was the leg they were keeping straight in the doorbell cam footage.
Not familiar with the Mauser .30-06 but I’ve used some bolt actions which had a single hex screw securing the barrel, which then unscrewed from the receiver for easy replacement, and stock folded/removed. If the barrel were concealed/causing the gait, and everything else fit in the backpack then it mostly makes sense. It would probably fit in the backpack but with the barrel protruding if that’s how it wound up assembled in the woods, probably wouldn’t be visible in the escape footage we have. Maybe disassembly didn’t go as planned.
in this case, i feel like there could’ve been two ways their escape went down:
- initial plan was to disassemble the rifle and run away with it, but something jammed and they threw the entire thing away in a panic.
- knowing that they couldn’t fit the entire gun in the bag even if disassembled, they made the dumping of the gun a part of the plan.
guy’s in custody now, so we’ll see what they’ve got to say.
