Even more shockingly, that was a weirdly common artstyle in the 00s. And by “weirdly common” I mean if you go back and look at series by year you’ll see it on the covers of multiple series per year in that era. That and the similar one where the eyes are also sort of extremely wide set rhomboids that are raised on the edge that’s closer (but not close) to the center of the face and drooping on the sides that make a weird faux-pout expression that looks sort of like the character is a melting wax sculpture that’s been squished.
Wrangling up all the mid-2000s moeblobs and putting them in a protective enclosure styled to look like a Japanese girls middle school where they can be safe from predators (the creepy character from every battle shonen).
