Depends on the kind of debt
I stopped paying my credit card bills and they sent them to an infinite chain of debt collectors (raising the national GDP every time it’s sold im sure) until after 7 years it fell off the statute of limitations and they can’t do shit fuck anymore
This didn’t work for my student loans which I applied for income based repayment the day they were finally going to default and I haven’t logged back in to look at it in 3 weeks because I’m afraid. Thanks Joe Biden
This didn’t work for my student loans… I haven’t logged back in to look at it in 3 els because I’m afraid.
Sounds like you’re using the strat regardless lol
The main issue with student loans is they will take any tax return you would get if you default.
Im more worried about wage garnishment
If you have a solid income, and a credit union account, see if they offer debt consolidation loans. You can often save a lot in interest doing it that way. My credit union gave me a 10% interest rate, still ridiculous, but better than the 26% I was paying on my credit cards. You can also look into 0% interest balance transfers on credit cards, but that also requires a decent credit score and access to credit cards.
This is actually how i went from dogshit credit to an incredible credit score without actually changing my amount of debt, and actually lead to me qualifying for a mortgage.
This is just more proof the whole system is bogus. Nothing changed with my actual financials but my “debt usage” went from like 90% to under 50%, which bumped my credit score, which lead to my credit cards getting higher limits, which lowed my usage further, which raised my credit score some more.
I dont suggest the approach as a general method for getting good credit, but if you’re already swimming in credit card debt then id give it a shot before just letting things go to default.
I’ll also add looking at a debt management plan with a credit counseling agency. They can often get you much lower interest rates on credit card debt, though it will probably have a moderate impact on your credit and you might not be able to access new credit while you’re on the plan. Look for one accredited by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.
DO NOT use a debt settlement company. Your credit gets destroyed in the process due to missing payments.
It’s just a made up concept, you’re good.
Hell yeah
It’s not real if you flee the country and never have to pay it back
There are two interlocking parts to direct action debt resistance that remains plausibly legal.
First is the debt whale, who is counted upon by the financial sector to keep generating interest on debts, so must be allowed to take out more debts.
Second is the debt eel, with negligible or no debts and a clean record.
The debt eel and the debt whale get together in a mutualistic arrangement that can be portrayed to the state as a landlord-tenant relationship. All property is legally controlled by the eel as the board member of a trust, which has an organizational imperative to share its resources equitably with all classes of members. Then the whale can go into more debt, funnel it into the trust to expand its holdings, and then declare bankruptcy as an individual, knowing that the trust/org will take care of the whale.
This is similar to how rich people accumulate their money without paying taxes and other premiums on it. The model is fueled by faith in each other, by interpersonal reliance in a form that the state does not recognize as having linked assets.
If you want to do something less scheme-like, just take out the debt-seeking part, and you can simply have a nonprofit that you donate as much as you can to, and the nonprofit is dedicated to housing solutions and environmental conservation (read: you live in unconventional buildings in the woods with all your friends). You can not have any vehicle or commute (besides a shared van/truck for scrapping and dumpster runs), do a bunch of gardening, cook meals in big batches, milk what’s left of society’s safety net, and sing and dance around the campfire every night.
TL;DR give up the strictly individual approach, and live like a communist.
What country are you in? Do you have any organisations like stepchange who could give advice, or potentially ask for some of the debt to be written off?
