I vaguely remember hearing about him in 2008 when the first Tesla Roadster was released. His cameo was in the second Iron Man, unless he was in the third one and I forgor.
They used Space X as the filming location for Hammer Industries in Iron Man 2. Which is it’s own nugget because Musk is more of a Justin Hammer than Stark, depending on how much credit you want to give Stark as a character.
Tesla was coming out with a cool electric car using a Lotus chassis back then (the original Tesla roadster) and the original SpaceX Falcon rocket was the first privately owned rocket to reach orbit, this was around 2008 I think so Musk was definitely making waves back then in nerdier circles.
The book “Founders at Work” features an interview with Max Levchin in which he describes how Musk wanted to switch the PayPal infrastructure from Unix to Windows NT was published in 2008, and they didn’t even feel it necessary to include his name, he’s only alluded to as “the guy who ran X [who] became CEO”.
The first movie was filmed in 2007. Did anybody even know who he was then?
