My favourite thing about people crying about ad hominem is that they’re usually wrong. An ad hominem isn’t a fancy way of saying “insult”, its a logical fallacy where you tie the quality of a person to their argument. Saying “you’re dumb” isn’t an ad hominem.
I love explaining that to dumbasses because it makes them seem even more dumbasseyAnyone who has ever spoken the phrase ad hominem has used it to mean “you insulted me so you’re wrong” without even realizing that an ad hominem fallacy is when someone says you’re wrong BECAUSE of the thing they’re insulting you for. Saying your argument is wrong because you’re stupid is an ad hominem, saying you’re wrong and you’re stupid is just an insult
lots of people think that argument fallacies are there like a sport rule where if you’re not nice and you break them then you’ll get points deducted.
Wow yeah this is exactly how it feels. I hadn’t been able to put that into words. It’s the projection of the general “rules on how games work” back onto the society that created the rules.

Thank you for being the debate nerd with that observation instead of me. It never seemed to play when deployed in context back in my even libber days.
Heh, listen kiddo, I used the magic “win the argument” words, which means you have to agree with me. You should feel honoured that I had to use 100% of my power to defeat you though. Most aren’t that lucky.

I feel like I just saw such a conversation the other day somewhere on here
