…[and] lowering building operating costs like insurance…

This is a giveaway to landlords. The cost of somewhat reduced rent (no % increase for a year or two, already limited by rent stabilization) is that the landords’ liability insurance will probably no longer pay for your medical bills when the floor drops out from under you.

Glad for the marginal benefit to renters, but please pay attention to the fine print.

well yeah but that is part of the city’s agreement with private landlords to be able to have rent controls in the first place. Obv not perfect but not sure how that undermines just how huge this is for millions of people this impacts

Redditors have been doing rent freeze propaganda for the entire time reddit has existed so it will be fun seeing how redditors react to this

That’s good, but I’m still not forgetting this:

I want to be clear on where I stand. I believe both Nicolas Maduro and Miguel Diaz-Canel are dictators. Their administrations have stifled free and fair elections, jailed political opponents, and suppressed the free and fair press.

Permanent side eye until this is walked back.

It was always critical support, of course

Really bad unforced error, but I think he has learned from it. Since then, he’s addressed other questions and issues like that by refocusing the topic of discussion back to NYC or the working class, which has been decent. Ideally would be nice for him to answer these questions head on like an actual socialist, but understandably he has a job that is a lot easier to do when you’re not burning your political capital on issues like explaining the intricacies of US imperialism

why? he was literally never going to be a communist and never ran on that platform. you cannot get a commie through electoralism. but the fact of the matter is he is making a difference and many lives in new york are going to be better because of him and his actions.

he can say whatever liberal shit he wants as long as he keeps doing this stuff, because we know he’s not the end goal.

So as long as the material conditions for people in NYC improve, he can co-sign whatever western talking point he wants then? That’s not acceptable to me. It makes every step forward feel hollow, because I have to wonder when this will happen again.

Zohran is popular and likeable, people listen to what he says. For a lot of people, he’ll be their introduction into socialism. When he says Cuba is run by a repressive dictator, people will accept that. Sure, it’s on us to dispel the misinformation, but we won’t reach everyone that he does. In my opinion, we can’t be tepid about this. He’s doing good things, but there needs to be serious accountability for throwing international solidarity out in the process.

It’s the basis of social fascism. Material benefits and splitting of the loot at home, imperial subjugation and exploitation abroad. This is his position and it should be opposed

Hello USA. Through tears I write this. I am an eight year old girl whose father is a humble home-provider. He can no longer make a living housing fellow citizens, and we cannot afford basic goods and services. We are suffering under the Mamdani regime. Please invade Manhattan with overwhelming deadly force and liberate us from oppression under shakira law.

Obviously this is good, but looking a little further ahead I’m curious what the attempted counterpunch will be here. What are we expecting class solidarity from landlords to look like?

Hmm…earn the vote of many, many tenants, or earn the vote of a handful of landlords

Tough decision I’m sure, as his opponents who lost the election would tell you

(I’m not doubting he did this to genuinely help people, I’m just saying that trying to win the votes of the majority over the minority is supposed to be an easy choice that just basically walks into your lap)

And yet Democrats seem to fuck it up over and over again, including with Israel.

Google says rent-stabilized units are “about half” of rental stock, so that’s substantial. Still, would be nice for it to apply to all leases.
