Safety razors are cheap and way better then this garbage. Worth learning.
Bought 50 feather blades about a decade ago an im still working through them. Good investment.
And those blades are basically pennies each. Meanwhile the cost for 10 cartridge head replacements can be the same as a whole safety razor kit.
Amazing investment.
Yeah it was maybe 30$ for a set of wet shaving stuff, blades, brush, bowl, and a 12 pack of arko sticks (I inherited the razor handle). Haven’t spent anything on shaving since. If I’d been using Gillette this whole time it’d probably have been hundreds of dollars.
Just wanted to note there was no learning I had to do with the one I bought. I shave exactly like I used to with the multi blades. And it wasn’t fancy or anything, just picked the cheapest one off amazon or whatever.
I only say this because I thought about switching for a long time before I did because the shaving posts on reddit made it seem like an almost mystical process with a high skill floor, but I shouldn’t have been worried
For learning, a word of caution to others: your facial hair and skin sensitivity is going to impact this. If you’ve always been shaving with a mechanical or just throw the Gillette around without caring much and expect a safety razor to act the same way, you might be in for a nasty surprise.
Learning isn’t hard for this, though. Just pay attention to a YouTube video or 2 and you should be good to go.
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. It takes some getting used to but I’m still using blades from a pack of 100 I bought years ago
have never used more than two
Possibly the best onion article ever, because shortly after, Gillette actually released the Mach 5:
Mad TV did a 20 blade razor which isn’t even that ridiculous anymore.
Pretty sure SNL did it first.
5? That’s for babies. I’ve found a 7 bladed razor:

Lol, keep in mind, that article came out 22 years ago, when the onion still had a print edition
They have a print edition again, funnily enough.
Yeah but back then it wasn’t ironic. Okay the paper itself was ironic, but ironically, the fact that it was paper was not ironic.
Back then you could find it on college campuses and similar places in these weird areas that had vending machines for various newspapers.
Can you mount several?
if you shave at all, look into safety razors
Bought one, no regrets. It’s just 15 bucks in Germany, from a reputable brand, so not even more expensive than regular ones.
If you’re looking into safety razors, get a starter pack with an assortment of blades. I was getting one and I thought it couldn’t possibly matter, because for God’s sake, it’s a sharp piece of metal, how could it? And then I tried a few different brands from the assortment pack, and sure enough one of them worked much better for my face than others (it was Shark, btw).
I can easily believe that for some people, one brand of blade is no good, while another is perfect, and I’d hate to think that someone tried shaving with the wrong kind and got turned off the whole project from that one wrong sample.
yup, since i switched over my facial skin is a lot happier than with this multiblade crap, and it is a lot cheaper too.
Couldn’t agree more. Peak shaving technology, a step in any other direction is a step down (apart from not shaving).
Couldn’t agree more. Far cheaper, easier to clean, blade lasts longer (with proper care), doesn’t tug if you have thicker hair…
I tried it years ago and never looked back.
Yeah one sharp blade is 100x better than 5 dull ones. Plus a nice lather and aftershave just makes me feel great. I still use a mach 3 for my undercarriage when I’m showering, but I love my safety razors and weekly shavette clean cut.
I use safety razor for everything… everything
I was getting razor burn from multiblade razors. Safety razors were the best thing ever for me. I no longer shave, but I still keep it just in case I have to remove my glorious beard
The more blades, the deeper the cut. The first blade pulls the hair up, causing the next blade to cut the hair below the skin level. Causing irritation and ingrown hairs.
Plastic cartridges need multiple blades, though, cause they can’t hold the blades in enough tension to get a good cut otherwise.
Discovering double-edged wet shaving turned shaving into something I look forward to rather than a chore
exactly my experience as well… I get peeved if it’s a shaving day and I have to rush it
I prefer safety dances.
You can dance if you want to.
For safety, ya really can’t beat a baby pool of Nair. But good luck getting that past air defenses.
That could be the edge I need to make me a first rate professional businessman.
Saw that joke maybe 25 years ago for the first time. Still think about it every time I see a razor ad
Yeah I was a kid and the bloody bandages etched into my mind forever
When they moved the pivot point from the center of the cartridge to the bottom, they lost me. Still using my probably 30 year old Sensor handle and cartridges, and probably will until I die.
Finally a weapon to surpass metal gear!
Best shave I get is from Schtick ST II. Just two blades, small head to get around contours.
I can’t really comprehend why a razor would need more than 2. I use a shavette, so for me 2 is too many.
Because big number is more better.
That’s marketing 101.
Straight blades are great, I can even cut hair with them.
