      Taking the Lord’s name in vain literally refers to the use of the tetragrammaton. We don’t actually know how to pronounce the tetragrammaton and the commonly given pronunciation is known to be deliberately wrong.

      The metaphorical meaning refers to speaking for god, like for example getting extremely huffy about your personal misunderstanding of the third commandment.

      Your dad is simultaneously wrong and guilty of the exact thing he thinks he’s mad about.
